REVOLVER GOLDEN GODS AWARDS 2014!!

***TONIGHT***

It's the 6th annual Revolver Magazine Golden God Awards. Live from Club Nokia in sunny Los Angeles! I've made mention before, it's nice that there's an awards show for Rock & Metal fans... given the fact Billboard, Grammy's, etc have all gone and taken a giant dump upon our genre of music. That's fine. The expression "Rock is Dead" has been played out over and over and over again, one wonder's if it was truly alive.

But I digress.... Let's break down the nominees:

Album of the Year
AVENGED SEVENFOLD - "Hail to the King"
BLACK SABBATH - "13"
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - "The Wrong Side of Heaven & the Righteous Side of Hell" Vol. 1 & 2
KORN - "The Paradigm Shift"
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - "...Like Clockwork"
VOLBEAT - "Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies"

I predict FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH walks away with the trophy in this one.

Best Vocalist
JEREMY McKINNON
- A DAY TO REMEMBER
M. SHADOWS - AVENGED SEVENFOLD
IVAN MOODY - FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
PAPA EMERITUS II - GHOST B.C.
JONATHAN DAVIS - KORN
JOSH HOMME - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

This one's really a toss up between Ivan, Davis & M. Shadows but I'm gonna say... M.Shadows FTW!

Dimebag Darrell Best Guitarist(s)
JERRY CANTRELL (ALICE IN CHAINS)
SYSNSTER GATES & ZACKY VENGEANCE (A7X)
TONY IOMMI (BLACK SABBATH)
JOHN PETRUCCI (DREAM THEATER)
ZOLTAN BATHORY & JASON HOOK (5FDP)
MUNKY & HEAD (KORN)

After some careful consideration, as this one's tough with all these nominees, I feel like the return of HEAD to Korn will be the deciding factor for them winning this award!

Paul Gray Best Bassist
JOHNNY CHRIST (A7X)
GEEZER BUTLER (BLACK SABBATH)
CHRIS KAEL (5FDP)
REX BROWN (KILL DEVIL HILL)
FIELDY (KORN)

This is another one of those toss up, situations. It's either gonna be CHRIST or KAEL!

Best Drummer
ARIN ILEJAY (A7X)
BRAD WILK (For Work With BLACK SABBATH)
VINNIE APPICE (KILL DEVIL HILL)
MATT HALPERN (PERIPHERY)
CHRIS ADLER (For WoRK With PROTEST THE HERO)
MIKE PORTNOY (THE WINERY DOGS)

Personally, I feel like there's a few other drummers out there that should've been nominated but for this I'll go with ILEJAY.

Best Live Band
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN
GOJIRA
LAMB OF GOD
MOTLEY CRUE
SLAYER
ROB ZOMBIE

Tough one, for sure. LAMB OF GOD crushed it back in November in KC and I've heard so many times how insane THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN is live but I'm gonna go with ROB ZOMBIE for Best Live Band!

Song Of The Year
ALICE IN CHAINS - "Hollow"
A7X - "Hail to the King"
BRING ME THE HORIZON - "Shadow Moses"
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - "Life Me Up"
OF MICE & MEN - "You're Not Alone"
THE PRETTY RECKLESS - "Going to Hell"

Have to go with A7X since "Hail to the King" hit number 1 on the charts.

Best Film & Video
BEHEMOTH - "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel"
HUNTRESS - "Zenith"
LAMB OF GOD - "As the Palaces Burn"
METALLICA - "Through the Never"
MOTIONLESS IN WHITE - "America"
PIERCE THE VEIL - "This is a Wasteland"

Gotta be "As the Palaces Burn" for LAMB OF GOD, though I wouldn't be surprised if METALLICA scored this one.

Best New Talent
DEAFHEAVEN
HEAVEN'S BASEMENT
ISSUES
SCAR THE MARTYR
TWELVE FOOT NINJA
ttt (CROSSES)

I think the fanbase of TWELVE FOOT NINJA might surprise a lot of people and champion them with the crown of Best New Talent.

Comeback of the Year
BLACK SABBATH
CARCASS
DEEP PURPLE
NINE INCH NAILS
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES

SABBATH, Duh!

Most Metal Athlete
TONY ALVA (Skateboarder)
GRANT BALFOUR (MLB)
JOSH BARNETT (UFC)
STEPHEN CURRY (NBA)
DEREK GARLAND (Motocross)
TUKKA RASK (NHL)

No F*cking Idea.

Most Dedicated Fans
A DAY TO REMEMBER
A7X
5FDP
OF MICE & MEN
THE PRETTY RECKLESS
SLAYER

5FDP. I've seen the numbers of their fans grow exponentially over the last few years.

Now let me state that I don't necessarily agree with all the winners I've chosen. Some, GASP, aren't my favorites but they're the ones I think the FANS will have chosen. And seeing as how this is all driven by fan voting, that's what my guesses are here. So let's kick back tonight, fire it up, crack open a cold one and enjoy ROCK & METAL getting just a wee bit of love! Live Stream starts at 7:00 PM out West, which means 9:00 PM in KC and 10:00 PM on the East Coast. Click this Link for all the details and make sure you follow me on Twitter @nivens because I'll be tweeting tonight throughout the show!

RECORD STORE DAY 2014

Tomorrow is the Sixth Annual Record Store Day. Created back in 2008, with Metallica as Ambassadors, the premise was and I suppose is to recognize the Mom & Pop Record Shops which have served over the years to introduce new tunes & bands into the hearts and lives of music fans worldwide. Yes, this is an international celebration on the third Saturday of April. Many people enjoy the idea of keeping the dream of vinyl alive. For a small segment, however, Record Store Day has already turned into a giant cesspool of Capitalistic greed! Where store owners unwillingly have to put up with thieves and vagrants clamoring for those limited edition prints in hopes of doubling, tripling, quadrupling or more their initial "investment" on a record by reselling it on Ebay or Craigslist. They, the few righteous ones, are already fed up with this "Holiday" though all agree it's important to venture into record stores and allow yourself to be turned on to new sounds. But I digress, as I shall be filming all day, I do sincerely hope I'm able to get out and put my preverbal money where my mouth is! With that, here's a quick breakdown of some of the few (but not limited to) records stores in the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area whom shall be participating in Record Store Day (affectionately known as RSD for the rest of this writing)!

I cannot say for certain but it has been quite some time since there's been a Record Store in Downtown KC, save for finding vinyl on sale out of cars in the River Market over the weekends or inside the giant antique mall, so when I heard about Barnyard Orbit in the West Bottoms a little shot of pride crossed my heart. Orbit's found inside of Rag & Bone at 1412 West 12th Street. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with live music kicking up at 1 p.m.

39th Street has become the pseudo de facto home for vinyl shops. Not only does Prospero's Books house vinyl but there's also Vinyl Renaissance & Audio. These guys will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the past I've stumbled in on RSD and found Ken Janikowski of The Republic Tigers strumming away solo style, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's live music again this year. I feel like they set up the live jam next door, though I could be wrong. There is also a Vinyl Renaissance in Downtown OP which will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. I'd be remised if I didn't point out there's an old house converted into a retail store on 39th Street, who sells vinyl, and from what I've gathered will be participating in RSD. I should warn you the proprietors of this establishment are incredible dicks and music snobs. Be warned they'll make you feel like a nincompoop just for asking simple questions. My advice is to skip this joint altogether.

As we continue a skosh southeast into Kansas City, from 39th Street, you'll find It's a Beautiful Day off Broadway. They're participating in Record Store Day though they're not putting out any limited addition vinyl prints, but they'll still have their super friendly and knowledgeable staff to assist you in any of your buys. They'll be open normal business hours, which I believe, is 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mill's Record Company is probably the smallest space you'll find yourself wandering into. Off Westport Road they've done a great job capitalizing on vinyl's resurgence and the local scene in KC. They plan on making a BIG ASS day out of RSD. Opening at 8:00 a.m. and staying open till 9:00 p.m. complete with bands.

For the most part the Mom & Pop Record shops have died out in the Burbs, sorta like everything else out there. A man's dreams, bright colors, the ability to think for one's self. Oh yes, the suburbs; land of bland and beige but HEY, there's great schools and the kids are safe, right?! Sorry-notsorry-I don't have a great affinity for suburbia. That being said, Vintage Stock is pretty much the only thing out there to rescue those poor middle and high school kids just waiting desperately to leave home. From what I've gathered in Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Overland Park, Liberty and everywhere else a Vintage Stock is found their hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Finally, if you're out in Lawrence check out Love Garden Sounds, opened from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. I've rolled in before with my girl and walked out all smiles after scoring a fuck-ton of vinyl and $1 CD's!

Now that we've covered where, let's talk about what! Depending on your style and taste there's a lot of limited addition music coming out for you to get your hands on. Here's just a few that piqued my interest. All are 12" Vinyl unless noted:

The Allman Brothers - Selections from: Play All Night: Live at the Beacon Theatre 1992
Big Mama Thornton - Sassy Mama
Clutch/Lionize - Run, John Barelycorn, Run/Ether Madness 7" Vinyl
Creedence Clearwater Revival - The 1969 Singles 10" Vinyl
Devo/The Flaming Lips - Side By Side Series 7" Vinyl
The Doors - Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine
Green Day - Demolicious
Ice T - Greatest Hits
Jay-Z/Linkin Park - Collision Course
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth
Mastodon - Live at Brixton
Motorhead - Afterschock
Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea/I Hate Myself And Want to Die 7" Vinyl
Off! - Learn to Obey 7" Vinyl
Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - Live at the Greek
The Pogues Live with Joe Strummer
The Ramones - Meltdown the The Ramones 10" Vinyl
Slipknot - Vol. 3
Soundgarden - Superunknown: The Singles
Type O Negative - Slow, Deep and Hard
The Folk Box 50th Anniversary
Sun Records Curated by Record Store Day (Volume 1)
Link Wray - Slinky/Rendezvous 7" Vinyl
The Yardbirds - Little Games
Frank Zappa - Don't Eat the Yellow Snow/Down in De Dew 7" Vinyl

Like I said, this is just a partial list of albums that caught my attention. For a complete rundown of jams and locations check out here -> www.recordstoreday.com

If you don't score any limited edition discs, so what. Who cares? Most importantly is that you get out, waltzed into a Record Store, spend a little time scouring over old or new album covers until you're able to find that gem you've always wanted to add to your collection. What if you don't have a collection? Don't you think Record Store Day is a great place to start? And if you were wondering who this year's Global Ambassador is for Record Store Day? Mother Fucking Chuck D, baby!
Happy Hunting!

New Video for POP EVIL's "Torn to Pieces"

I still say they "borrowed" heavily from 3 DOORS DOWN's "Here Without You" but the song is climbing the charts (as of this blog #5) and we'll see them at ROCKFEST!
Do enjoy!!

But They Made It!

I have been a KISS fan all my life and was so pleased to hear they made it but for many years I have really put little stock into the "Hall Of Fame."
Too many non rock bands make it in then I read the treatment to a true Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band...
Read for yourself.
M

KISS frontman Paul Stanley has slammed Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame co-founder and Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner as a "spineless weasel," claiming that the guitarist/vocalist and the rest of the band were treated like "uninvited guests" during Thursday night's (April 10) induction ceremony.

"Our treatment at the [Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame] confirmed my worst suspicions," Stanley fumed via Twitter. "Wenner and the rest are spineless weasels." He went on to say that the people behind the Rock Hall gave the members of KISS "no passes" or "schedule" for the evening, but didn't elaborate on what exactly he was referring to. He concluded: "We were great and [Wenner] remains a small man."

Stanley's bandmate, KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons, also took a couple of shots at Rolling Stone on Twitter, mocking the magazine's original critical review of LED ZEPPELIN's first album, writing "Rolling Stone. Idiots then. Idiots now." He then posted a link to a video from the early 1970s band CHRISTOPHER MILK, which featured John Mendelsohn, the writer who penned the negative reviews that appeared in Rolling Stone of each of the first two LED ZEPPELIN LPs.

Stanley ended his Hall Of Fame speech on Thursday by calling the evening "vindication" for the fans. He also took a dig at the Hall Of Fame by saying, "The people, I believe, are speaking to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and what they're saying is, 'We want more.' They deserve more. They want to be a part of the induction. They want to be a part of the nomination. They don't want to be spoon-fed by a handful of people. Choices. The people pay for tickets. The people buy albums. The people who nominate do not. Let's not forget that these are the people that make it all possible. We just benefit from it."

KISS did not perform at the ceremony — the Hall Of Fame wanted the original quartet only to play, while Simmons and Stanley insisted on the current lineup performing as well. In the end nobody won that battle.

The 29th annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was taped and will air on May 31 on HBO.

Found Music Friday's!!

A band building a lot of momentum these days is EMMURE. On Monday they dropped a video for "Like LaMotta"! Peep it here!

JOSEY SCOTT might've left SALIVA in 2011 but that hasn't stopped the band from moving forward, which they'll do with their second studio effort featuring new vocalist BOBBY AMARU at the end of the month with "Rise Up". They rolled out a video for the title-track, also, on Monday.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE dropped a new video, on Tuesday, for "Smooth Sailing" off of Like Clockwork. Might wanna put it down on your planner that QOTSA will be here with PRIMUS on the 13th of May. Same day as SLAYER, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES & EXODUS!

FU MANCHU Mother F*ckers!!

CALIFORNIA BREED put out another video this week for the tune "Midnight Oil". It will be interesting to see if this band can gain more traction out there than the previous band GLENN HUGHES & JASON BONHAM had out in BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION.

On Tuesday we'll see the release of KYNG's latest work "Burn the Serum" and they've put the entire disc up for your listening pleasure over on Soundcloud!

This was just some of the new videos and music that dropped this week. It's by no means the official be all that came out.

The new Mastodon song "High Road" used to sit here but I received a cease & desist letter so I had to pull it. I guess that's the high road there. Badum Bum!
