Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog! (9/23)

Kicking off this week's WRWU Blog is a little something for you A-Hole Bob!

* Iconic rock band RUSH will be dropping a two-disc live album "Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland" as well as "Moving Pictures: Live 2011" on November 7th. As Peter Griffin said, "Canada sucks!"... just kidding... sorta....

* Drummer Matt Sorum of THE CULT, GNR, & VELVET REVOLVER is selling his bass drums from THE CULT'S "Beyond Good and Evil" tour.

* Kirk Hammett of METALLICA has custom hand-made guitar straps made from high-end Italian leather for sale. You can purchase those from www.kirk-hammett.com

* Speaking of METLLICA, their album poster with LOU REED has been banned from London's Underground for resembling graffiti too closely.

* I wonder if London's Underground will ban STEEL PANTHER'S new album cover?

* PEARL JAM, hot on the heels of their new documentary, announced they are halfway done with a new album!

* Looks like NEIL YOUNG'S following in the foot steps of KEITH RICHARDS and SAMMY HAGAR by putting out his own autobiography in the fall of 2012.

* DISTURBED to put out a B-Sides compiolation "The Lost Children" before the year's up.

* Oh and if anyone care's, cause everybody huts... sometimes... R.E.M. called it quits this week.

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog

Not to toot my own horn but I honestly laughed the most during this weeks Weekly Rock Wind Up Vlog. If you haven't watched it yet, please do and have your friends take a gander at it too.

Just a couple few pieces to make note of from this weeks Rock news:

*Iggy Pop broke his foot in concert, continued to play, will now be sidelined but intends and looks to be making a strong recovery and all in the Stooges feel like they'll be rescheduling the rest of the tour for the end of October/early November.

*Anthrax, Testament, and Death Angel announcing this week they are gonna hit the road together in October and November. No stops, yet, planned for KC. Closest will be in Wichita on the 18th of October.

*Word, via a fan-site, is the mixing is complete on the new Van Halen album. Still no date of release or track-listing nor if this info is factual or not.

*Five Finger Death Punch guitarist, Jason Hook, was interviewed this week about the upcoming album "American Capitalist". He stated it was pretty much an extension of "War is the Answer". Ergo, if you liked "War" you'll like "American Capitalist".

*An Eric Clapton & Wynton Marsalis collaboration will be out on CD and DVD later this month. Filmed in April, where the two paired up for two sold out shows in NYC at the Lincoln Center, their performance was actually shown on the big screen this week and I saw it. It's pretty amazing and I, for one, can't wait for it to drop on Tuesday.

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog (8/19)

Greetings and salutations to you all out there in the cyberworld. Many thanks for reading through this week's WRWU Blog. I'll do my best to entertain, educate and not suck. Let us begin!

*AC/DC wine? Yep. Looks like the fellas are getting into the wine business soon and speaking of AC/DC. Bon Scott area bassist Mark Evans is putting out a tell all book about the Bon-era in November titled "Dirty Deeds: My Life Inside/Outside AC/DC.

*Metallica and Lou Reed have confirmed their album will be out on November 1st.

*After nearly splitting up a year ago it seems guitar god Slash and his wife, Perla, are to renew their wedding vows later this month in Ibiza.

*Slipknot/Stone Sour front-man Corey Taylor, again, in the news this week with the statement that he and Duff McKagan have been working on music together. He did also state that there were no hard feelings with him not joining Velvet Revolver.

*As expected Shinedown to re-team with producer Rob Cavallo. Cavallo was producer for Shinedown's most successful album to date in "The Sound of Madness". Be on the look out in the new year for the new, as-of-yet, untitled album.

*I know we don't play him but I'm a huge fan of Tom Waits and felt like this story was worth sharing. Seems his website, tomwaits.com, is encouraging people to come to his site on Tuesday the 23rd where he'll possibly roll out a new song and/or discuss his new album.

*Metal Bible is now available in English. Initially published in 2005 in Swedish and Dutch it's finally ready for American eyes... that can't read Swedish or Dutch. Some of the people featured include; David Ellefson, Brian "Head" Welch and Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain.

*Pretty cool thing going on in NYC September 12 at the Best Buy Theater and it's the second Metal Masters Clinic. Who's on board to participate in this? Charlie Benante, Anthrax's drummer. Frank Bello, Anthrax bassist. Kerry King... it's fucking Kerry King, if ya ask you better learn! David Ellefson of Megadeth and Mike Portnoy. This is a free clinic but will have limited numbers. If you go, tell me how it is.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog. Feel free to share with your friends!

Weekly Rock Wind Up (8/12)

And so here we are again with YOUR Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog where I attempt to keep you in the loop with all of Rock-n-Roll's comings and goings. Let us begin... shall we?

*Jack White and Bob Dylan are probably the two biggest stars to contribute to a brand new collection of recordings of songs by country music legend Hank Williams. "The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams" is slated to be released on October 3rd and will have a Who's-Who list of artist contributing to never-before-heard songs from the late songwriter. And just who are some of the names in conjuction to Dylan and White? Alan Jackson, Norah Jones, Levon Helm, Sheryl Crow, Merle Haggard and Dylan's own son Jakob.

*I know neither of the following artist show up on The Rock but we know who they are in Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse. As we all know Winehouse died on July 23rd and it seems that Gaga wants to portray her in biopic.

*Another one of those, "Holy shit! Is that album really 20 years old?!?" If we're talking about Metallica's "Black Album" then yes, it is! And to commemorate it a litney of artist have covered the songs and will be available in the September issue of Germany's Metal Hammer magazine. Some of the artist include; DevilDriver, Sodom, Motorjesus and LEMMY!!

*"God Bless Ozzy" the documentary about rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, and produced/directed by his son Jack, hits theaters on the 24th and 29th on this month. There will be showings in and around KC. Follow this link to see where a showtime will be near you; http://www.fathomevents.com/originals/series/godblessozzy0824_29.aspx

*Looks like RATT to make another return to the world of Rock-n-Roll in 2012. If you recall the resurfaced, initially, last year with "Infestation" which won some critical acclaim. However, they briefly toured then went on indefinate hiatus.

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog

So much music news to pimp out this week.

*I'm aware we don't play any Miles Davis but many of those in the world of Rock-n-Roll know who Davis is and his importance on the world of music and the legacy he left behind. Thus, it's with extreme enthusiasm I share with you that actor Don Cheadle is making the Miles Davis Biopic a reality! The storyline, as of now, will focus on one day in Davis' life with Herbie Hancock handling the music.

*Looks like Vegas is getting in on the rock festival idea. The inaugural 48 Hour Festival will take place at the Luxor Festival Grounds on Saturday, October 15th, and Sunday, October 16th. Headliners will be Avenged Sevenfold, Korn and Godsmack with support from Five Finger Death Punch, Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, Hollywood Undead, Sick Puppies, Escape the Fate, Sevendust, Adelitas Way, Rev Theory, 10 Years, Art of Dying and many more!

*Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, founding members of KISS, will team up with rock journalist Ken Sharp on "Nothin' To Lose" which will be an oral history of KISS' early years. What makes this story interesting is the fact that two different KISS memoirs are due out soon. Guitarist Ace Frehley's "No Regrets" drops on November first and, drummer, Peter Criss has a book planned for 2012. Will Simmons and Stanley's book be a counter to theirs? I suppose we'll find out.

*Are you like me and still a young kid at heart? When you see certain figurines... or dolls as some say... of your favorite rock god do you buy them? Maybe you've got a few of the Todd McFarlane collection. Well now you can own the Beastie Boys! Little dolls were made for their most recent video of "Don't Play No Game that I Can't Win" and will only set ya back... $750! Hey, that's ONLY $250 a piece.

*Queen fans mark September 5th on your day planner as their two-night stint at Wembly Stadium, back in 1986, is coming to DVD. Not only will you be entertained by some of Queen's biggest hits, you'll also enjoy behind-the-scenes features which include new interviews with Brian May and Roger Taylor.

*Believe it or not U2's Actung Baby is twenty years old and the Irish rockers will be re-issuing it on November first. There's to be five different remastered re-releases including packages that include vinyl, CD's and DVD's.

*This week the board game Monopoly busted out two new versions of their old game with Metallica Monopoly and AC/DC Monopoly.

*Dream Theater announced their fall tour this week. Beginning in September on the 24th in San Francisco and ending in Austin on the 26th of October. As of now, no stops planned for KC and it seems the closest would be in Pittsburgh, PA.

*And finally, how would you like to own John Bonham's old classic car from the 1976 concert film "The Song Remains The Same"? Seems the current owner, Bruce Screen, is hoping the car will be picked up by a museum where it can be appreciated. Screen purchased the car in 2000 and hasn't taken it out much because he was "too frightened to drive it on the roads".

What's going on with Disturbed?

The following article is copied from Blabbermouth as reported by The Pulse of Radio.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, DISTURBED frontman David Draiman is speaking out on the speculation regarding the band's future, which he himself started two weeks ago when he hinted that the group's current tour could be its last for a while — if not for good. Draiman confirmed to The Pulse Of Radio that DISTURBED plans to take an indefinite hiatus, and gave some hints about the "personal reasons" behind the decision. "Many of those reasons are have to do with the state of the music industry in general and, you know, the demise of hard rock and heavy metal right now, and I think it's just a good time for DISTURBED, after 10 to 12 years straight of touring, to go away for a little while and kind of wait for the phoenix to rise from the ashes here," he said. "It's frightening times right now, and it's just a good time for us to go away."

But Draiman also admitted that DISTURBED may in fact never come back. "It could be a concern," he said. "You don't know. We don't know. I can't definitively tell you one way or the other at this point. We really haven't gotten that far in our discussions. We all agree that we are going to step away for an indefinite period of time."

Draiman told Billboard that one thing the hiatus is not about is any personal strife between the four band members, saying, "This is really not due to any animosity — I want to make that very clear. In fact, we just had dinner together last night. Believe me, it's not like we can't work with each other anymore or we don't get along."

The singer said that all four members of the group have other creative endeavors they'd like to pursue, with both he and guitarist Dan Donegan interested in producing other acts.

Draiman added that he doesn't think a solo album is in his future. But he also told Billboard, "Depending on how far those individual interests end up taking us, and depending on how much we end up missing (the band) over the course of time — which, of course, at some point I'm sure we will — that will determine if and when we return."

In the meantime, the band is still touring the country on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, which passes through Virginia Beach on Tuesday (August 2). Some sort of live release and a B-sides collection may also be in the works.

Draiman said that the band, which has toured for 12 years and issued five albums, is playing "stronger...and with more passion" on the current trek, adding, "We're all viewing this as our last hurrah for awhile, and we're making them count."

Reasons why Dave Grohl is awesome.

With the Foo Fighters coming into KC in September I felt it only appropriate to launch a blog of all the reasons Dave Grohl is awesome. I'll start it off but, please, feel free to add your comments.

#1. He's Dave "Mother Fuckin" Grohl.
#2. He plays a wicked guitar.
#3. He plays a wicked set of drums.
#4. He's not afraid to throw punk-ass-mother-fuckers out of his show. (Note Video below)

Like I said, feel free to add to this list.

Loutallica!!

Just confirmed recently is the fact that punk icon Lou Reed has indeed teamed up with Metallica and recorded an album. Reed recently told Rolling Stone magazine that the teaming up was "A marriage made in heaven."

What's your take?
Will this kill or will this suck?

Looks like the Red Hot Chili Peppers have slated August 30th as THE day for their much anticipated album, I'm With You. This will be the first studio work since 2006's double-disc Stadium Arcadium which went number one in twenty-eight countries. It'll also be the first album to showcase new guitarist Josh Klingoffer. Once again, or for the sixth album in a row, legendary producer Rick Rubin is behind the scenes. I'm With You was recorded at East West in Los Angeles and Shangri-la in Malibu. As of now the Peppers are only playing Japan's Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka on August 13th, Tokoyo on August 14th and headlining Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil on September 24th.

Congrats to Jane's Addiction!

Yesterday, June 1st, Jane's Addiction was inducted into the Guitar Center RockWalk by Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello saying, "They're a band that could have happened nowhere else and a band that sounds like the city in which they were formed. You can hear the violence, the drugs, the beauty, the ocean, the hope, smog, fear and redemptive power of our city in JANE'S music." The city he's describing is, obviously, Los Angeles.

And according to their website Guitar Center's RockWalk is "Dedicated to honoring those individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the music industry." Perhaps something one should take in upon a trip to LA. (http://www.rockwalk.com/RWstory/RWstorymore.cfm)

Wow! Rockfest '11 Was Amazing...

I'm still sore. True Story.

Before I dive into my most memorable moments at this year's Rockfest I just want to thank all of you who made it out, braved the slight chill and still had a knockdown-drag out-good-goddamn-time! Thank you! Can't wait till next year!

My day started off with F'Em Up Chuck, who crashed at my house Friday night, waking me around 8:15 to inform me he was heading to Liberty Memorial to begin his long day working behind the scenes driving the golf carts. Here's a cat who's no longer in KC, nor at Entercom or the Rock but rather working in radio in NYC, and he comes back in town to work Rockfest. Think he likes being there? As I was saying, he woke me up early to inform me he was heading off to the venue and my head was a little sore from the fact we were up a little later than anticipated drinking, listening to music and in essence being punks. It was great.

My adoptive mom came down as did one of my biological brothers with one of his friends. It was a pretty cool experience having breakfast in the Westside at Los Alamos with them and their meeting of each other for the first time. Once we finished loading our stomachs with a little substance it was time for us to head over to Rockfest. We parked, took Ma's car so she'd have it when she was ready to leave, and headed towards the check in spot for my guests. Mind you this was about 15 minutes before the gates opened and there was a beautiful, long, line from Wyandotte Street east to Main Street. Wow! What an amazing site to see.

Gates opened, crowd headed in and the first dope picture I got (minus the crowd shots) was a dude setting up his hammock in one of the trees. Not really sure how he climbed the tree, but he got it up and was presumably posted there the entire day. After we strolled around for a bit and caught some of Evalyn Awake we headed back to the VIP tent to grab a beer, some food, water and Monster Energy drinks. I then had to head over to the broadcast booth to meet A-Hole Bob and do my first stage announcement for New Medicine. It's truly amazing to see how many people are already in attendance even before one in the afternoon.

I had a couple hours to spend bouncing around and catching Zakk's performance as well as Halestorm before I had to do my other two stage announcements pretty much back to back from the second stage and the first stage. On stage two I had the pleasure of introducing Crossfade. It's clear they're loved here by how quickly the crowd filled up for them. After catching the first song I headed back to the main stage with Bob to do my introduction for Sevendust. I don't know if there's any words to really personify what they bring to an event like Rockfest but it's nothing short of amazing!

After introducing Sevendust it was time for me to go on air and hold down the interviews from four to eight. First one was with Disturbed front man Dave Draiman. I'd met Dave before when we did that big radio takeover interview with Disturbed before the release of "Asylum" and from what I could gather our chat went well on air and he, as well as I, enjoyed ourselves. Corey Taylor, do I really need to say where he's from???, probably gave the best interview of everyone. He was revved up, excited, happy and just an absolute blast to interview. Of course I'd be remissed if I didn't mention that the lads from Red Line Chemistry, Bert-Randy-Todd-Dale and Mick, gave me one hell of an interview and we all had a blast chatting with each other especially because they came up after their set and by all accounts just killed it. My interview with Black Label Society was solid and what made it most memorable for me was watching Folkers, our web-monkey, completely freak out like a little girl meeting Justin Bieber for the first time. He was bright red, sweaty, and had the goofiest smile from ear to ear after he came out of the group photo I had to thrust him in to!

Once my broadcast was over I was off to find my friends and brother and have a smoke and a drink. It's a full speed ahead kind of a day and I very much needed it. Myself and my party departed about halfway thru Disturbed's set and walked back to my house. The trek isn't all that far, as I live downtown and made it back to my house with ample time to spare before we watched the fireworks from my front deck. It was an awesome experience and one that I can't wait to do all over again.... in about a year from now!

Thanks again everyone who came out. You make this station what we are and I'm so proud to say I get to work here!

Other notes I just remembered:

**Being in the broadcast booth while the Bunny Ranch girls were flashing the crowd from five feet away from me and all the beads that kept flying up at them, and thus at me.

**Chick Fight in the VIP

**Having a police officer stop me... to thank me for the work we do. It was surreal but much appreciated. As soon as we were done chatting I hauled ass out of there before he needed a good reason to haul me in! Guilty conscious? Yeah, a little!

**Seeing the dude in the purple suit floating around.

**Shrek

**Foo Fighters Sprint Center show announced on Post Rockfest Monday!

Feel free to comment and add your own memories!

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog For May 5th

Some other notable stories from the world of rock-n-roll this week tells us that Sammy Hagar, who's been doing some massive press work in relation to his new autobiography "Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock", turned down lead front man roles in Motley Crue, Velvet Revolver, Pantera and Aerosmith. If he did happen to step in for Vince Neil, Scott Weiland, Phil Anselmo or Steven Tyler which band do you suppose he would have succeeded with? And I suppose in the same breath which band would it have been a disaster for him to team up with?

The Big Four Festival is now confirmed for the Bronx on September 14th, Yankee Stadium. Does this mean it'll also go down in the South or Midwest? As of now, that's uncertain.

Iggy Pop will cover The Beatles on his new CD with "Michelle". He'll also cover Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'". And look for a new Stooges album with guitarist James Williamson. But wait... that's not all... A new four-CD set of concert bootlegs is slated to roll out on the 19th of this month, "Roadkill Rising: The Bootleg Collection 1977-2009".

More than 30 acts will be contributing to a tribute album for the legendary all-female, punk-pop group The Runaways. The Donnas, The Dandy Warhols, Kittie, and New York Dolls' David Johansen are just a few of the artists you can expect to find on the two-CD compilation available June 7th. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Although he has not confirmed or denied it it seems Mick Jagger isn't the only memeber of the Rolling Stones who are working on solo music. Word on the street is Keith is in Manhattan's Germano Studios with producer Steve Jordan and engineer Dave O'Donnell. Both have won Grammy's for their work with Eric Clapton and John Mayer, just to name a few.

Your own robot?

I was watching a special last night called "What's The Next Big Thing". Produced for television on the channel Nova and made available via Netflix. One of the segments talked about humans owning their own robots. Some robots looked very robotic, think R2D2 over C3PO. However some of the robots were very humanlike and that's what freaked me out a bit. I added the video for you to watch and note the comment that got me concerned. Sure I may have been a bit stoned but when a robot that's very humanlike-as well as purposefully by design a Phillip K. Dick look-alike- that gains all its knowledge from human interaction and the internet, says that as he evolves and possibly becomes the Terminator he'll remember some of us as his friend and will be happy watching us in his people zoo... It's freaks ya out a little bit!
Is my paranoia just that? Paranoia that's been perpetuated in the Sci-Fi movies and comics of the past? Or should we have legitimate concern here? What do you think?

Watch the full episode. See more NOVA scienceNOW.

And if you are interesting in owning your own robot they're available for sale from $8500 to $14,750 and found here; http://hansonrobotics.wordpress.com/

Weekly Rock Wind Up (4/22)

Hello fans of my Weekly Rock Wind Up vlog. Here's an extended version of some of the news I covered in my video:

Elvis Presely's Graceland... Denmark?
A larger than the Memphis orginal Graceland estate opened inDenmark in the town of Randers and will be called Graceland Randers. This idea was developed by fan Henrick Knudsen and with the backing of Priscilla has a gift shop, restaurant and museum.

A one-two punch for the late great Johnny Cash!
His boyhood home will be saved. Arkansas State University purchased the Dyess, Arkansas house and plan to restore the home's structure and create a museum for it... AND it will be paid for by proceeds generated from an annual Johnny Cash Music Festival. Inagural festival is planned for August 4th at ASU's convention center and as of right now the growing list of performers include; Rosanne Cash, Tommy Cash, John Carter Cash, Rodney Crowell, George Jones, Garry Morris and Kris Kristofferson!
ROAD TRIP!!

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE confirming via their webpage they will be performing in LA on Saturday July 30th with Muse and Rise Against. No word on if this will mean new Rage but I do know I'll be in LA that weekend and plan on attending this show!!

Slash says as of now there's no plans for Velvet Revolver for at least 2 years. Yes, they did record a couple tracks with Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour) but other than that that's all it is. A small courting with no payoff.

Blink-182 canceling their tour plans for U.K. and Ireland to focus on their new album which they had hoped would be finished by the start of summer. This could be bad! Why else would the album not be finished other than they can't agree on it. More details as they unfold...

BeachBoys to reunite, sorta, and put out a single to benefit the victims of Japan. Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston will team up on the song "Don't Fight the Sea" originally for Jardin'e "A Postcard from California" with the B-side being an a cappella mix of the 'Boys 1968 song "Friends".

A 20th anniversary reissue edition of the film "1991: The Year Punk Broke"has a date set for sometime in the fall. The film documents Sonic Youth's 1991 European headlining tour with future grunge-gods Nirvana as their opening act. Initially release in '91 on VHS the reissue will include previously unseen footage of the Ramones, Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland and Gumball!

Lady Gaga & Brian May of Queen team up on Gaga's new album, "Born this Way". And it turns out she's a HUGE fan. So much so that her stage name of Gaga comes from a Queen song "Radio Ga Ga". Who would've thunk?

And in case you missed it... New Beastie Boys video and it's DOPE!!

Spring has Sprung...

Loving this weather, aren't you?
And with the spring comes plans for the summer and the travels we'll all be partaking... if you're partaking to travel.

Here's what I know I've got lined up, thus far:
End of April to Atlanta. This will be a quick in and out deal from Saturday AM to Sunday PM for a birthday party.
May 14th... I think I'll be at Rockfest ;)
Second weekend in June will put me in NYC, again. Trying to catch a ballgame and doing a bit of goofing off.
Vacay in July, the last week, will see me and my girl head northwest to Portland and then down to LA. I've never been to the Northwest and am stoked about this run. Alli, my girl, has family there so we'll see them for a minute and then when we get down to LA we'll hang with her grandma and friends I've got out there.
The end of August sees me out West, again. This time in SanFran for a friends wedding and another wedding over Labor Day in Arizona.
Whew... gonna be a busy summer. Oh, did I mention my birthday is July 18th. Just putting that out there.
What about you?
Where you heading this summer/what are you looking forward to?

Foo Docu + Live Performance in 3D!!

New Foo! That in itself is one exciting statement for many of us out there and on Tuesday night I and a handful of Foo fans sat in a theater in Warrensburg Missouri, about 65 miles - an hour drive- outside of Kansas City, to get a healthy dose of all things Foo. Together, a legion of Dave fans, Taylor fanatics and Pat Smear hopefuls waited patiently through a brief 15 minute delay (it was beamed nationwide live, there's glitches) to learn firsthand the story of the Foo Fighters and to witness them perform their new album "Wasting Light" live in 3D!

In order to learn the origins of the Foo we had to hear and understand the end of one monster of a band in Nirvana and a quite lesser known act but one with just as much significance into the start of the Fighters in Sunny Day Real Estate. Without giving away anything that can't be learned on Wikipedia what became the sound of Foo Fighters was initially a cassette recording by Dave Grohl and the immediate addition of Nate Mendel. That is the formative backbone to FF. Dave and Nate. Pat Smear, whether on stage or not, will always be a member in the Foo Fighters. A permanent fixture and one who right now seems super excited for where they are as a band and where he is as a man playing music in said band. But in the start of it all, THE backbone was Dave and Nate.

Being a fan of Dave Grohl, or as I like to say having a non-sexual-man-crush on him, it was pretty cool to hear how he handled some of the painful decisions he had to make as captain of his team. Decisions he never had to make when he was just "a drummer". He's a pretty smart cat and even though those choices were difficult to make at the time, one's left with the impression he did it for the overall success of the band and nothing that was personal or with malice. He's pretty classy, actually.

How and when does Taylor Hawkins become a Foo is covered. Why Alanis Morissette plays into the FF is told, as is the story of Chris Shiflett, but there's aspects of their story (Taylor and Chris) that one may have not known. In fact everyone's back-story was told. From those that were in the band for a minute, those that made it longer before being ousted and those that are the Foo we know today. The telling of these stories was honest, brutal, raw and for everyone pretty emotional. There’s a part where Dave’s addressing the original drummer and I think he truly feels remorse for how everything ended between them in 1996.

If you're a fan already when you watch this documentary and wondering what you can get out of it I offer up the notion that you'll come to appreciate the road that was paved to get to the Foo and then in turn what they did once they got on that road. Will you gain a newfound respect for the Fighters if you're not already a fan? I don't know, but I do know I have a deeper respect for them as musicians and am happy I made the hour long trip to see it… funky popcorn and a 15 minute delay be damned!

Weekly Rock Wind Up (4/1)

** As you guys already know Godsmack will be at the Midland Theatre on May 3rd and just announced this week 'Smack front man Sully Erna will be at Liberty Hall in Lawrence performing a solo show on June 1st. Erna, who will lead an eight-piece ensemble band, said the show will be "a world of beautiful scenery, world cultures, and amazing cinematic visuals that will leave you breathless at times."

** Aaron Lewis, solo show at the VooDoo Lounge on the 22nd, says Staind is working on new material and it will hearken back to the Dysfunction days. Johnny, producer for The Illusion of Progress, is back behind controls on the new disc.

** Aerosmith will drop a new CD on May 10th however it won't be new stuff rather Tough Love: Best of the Ballads with some of your favorite couple-skate tunes such as Angel, Cryin', Crazy and Dream On.

**Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave/Street Sweeper Social Club guitarist Tom Morello has signed a new deal with an indie label, New West Records, and will release World Wide Rebel Songs in a few months. He'll go by what he's gone by as a solo artist The Nightwatchman.

**A sort of new sample of Korn music can be listened to on a previous blog of mine.

**Deftone's front man Chino Moreno has a new project he's working on with FAR guitarist Shaun Lopez called Crosses. They expect to drop a new album with 16 tracks soon.

Deep Purple will hit the road this summer. Their first North American tour in four years, A Night with Deep Purple, will have a 30 piece orchestra in tow and is set to begin on June 3rd in Rama, Ontario, Canada. No stops as of now in KC. In fact this tour will mostly hit just the West Coast in Cali and the Northeast. However if you feel like road-tripping it from KC to Minneapolis they'll perform at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on June 19th or the night before in Highland Park Illinois.

** On the metal side of things Devildriver bassist, Jonathan Miller, has called it quits after nine years.

** There was a solid metal band a few years back called Bloodsimple. Sadly they imploded but by doing so a handful of the members went back to their band prior to, known as Vision of Disorder and restarted it. Ergo it's with great happiness I share to you that V.O.D. are planning to enter into the studio in May and work on a new album.

** There's been a lot of great feuds in rock-n-roll between brothers. Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Chris and Rich Robinson from the Black Crowes come to mind. The original feud probably belongs to Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks but it seems that brotherly love may prevail and we might see Kinks reunion. Maybe. Nothings definite but a maybe is a good place to start.

** What do you get when you cross the Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night and Inception? Hopefully, according to Duff McKagen, "(something) as funny as we think it's going to be. Seems for the upcoming release of Duff's Loaded album The Taking that drops on April 19th a movie will be released for it as well.

And I know it's not necessarily rock news but I know many people dug this flick so I figured I'd put the trailer for the sequel up for ya!
(I hope it's funnier than the first... just my humble opinion)

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog

Twas a busy week in the world of Rock-n-Roll. Much Foo news as I covered in my Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog. Same with Pearl Jam and front-man Eddie Vedder. Well inside this blog you'll get more Rush, Sammy, Alice knowledge then you've ever had before!!! OK, that might be a little overkill. Then again, sometimes my job is overkill. That being said, let's jump right into new music news.

Jane's Addiction diligently working on a new album. Although they're without Duff McKagen, Perry Ferrell's pretty sure Jane's annoyed him which is why he left. they do have a working title "The Great Escape Artist" and will showcase work from TV on the Radio member and Yeah Yeah Yeahs producer Dave Sitek. Expect this album to be ready for the masses by summer.

Ozzy's re-releaseing two of his heavy hitters in "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" on May 31st. Both will be available individually on vinyl or CD or together in a deluxe collector's box.

Rob Zombie inducted Alice Cooper into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. Here's video footage from Fuse TV.

If you're needing to be re-upped on Poison before they arrive at the Spring Center in June with Motley Crue and the New York Dolls you'll want to pick up the two-disc "Double Dose of Poison: Ultimate Hits" on May 3rd. It will help celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band.

The original Alice Cooper group box set comes out in June and will feature four CDs from the years 1964-1974 with demos, rarities, live, spoken word and the live show of 1971 "Killer" tour in St. Louis. Plus a 64-page, full-color yearbook style book with hard front and back cover.

iDrum was officially launched this last week. It's the world's first truly interactive magazine for drummers containing news, reviews, lessons and hours of video content. Completely free and featuring Rush's Neil Peart, for more info check out www.idrummag.com

A new Foo Fighters documentary "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth" will show in select movie theaters nationwide on April 5th. The only stops near Kansas City will be in Manhattan, KS - 8PM at Seth Childs 12 and Warrensburg, MO - 8PM Carmike University 8. For more info click me, Foo!!

Weekly Rock Wind Up (3/4)

Hello faithful WRWU readers. Thanks again for taking some time out of your busy day to get caught up on what's going on in and around rock-n-roll this week.

Let's jump into New Music expected/being worked on.

*Rumors surfaced this week that Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger will be releasing a solo album this year. According to Mick's brother, Chris, Jagger will team up with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics.

*Stoked about this little nugget of knowledge; Tom Waits official Twitter page Tweeted this week that he's back in the studio working on a new album.

*Record Store Day is on April 16th and if you're a fan of the Deftones you'll want to find the nearest mom & pop record store that will be carrying one of the ultra-limited (only 5000 copies) Deftones album "Covers". Some of the tracks to expect on the album will be "Drive" by The Cars, "No Ordinary Love" by Sade, "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" by The Cure.

*On March 9th Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett will put out a new educational book/CD pack "The Sound and the Fury". The book plans to combine all of Hammett's writings from Guitar World as well as a CD of demos played by former Grim Reaper guitarist Nick Bowcott.
... And speaking of Metallica another concert announced this week of the Big Four, sadly it won't be stateside. The final date on The Big Four's European trek will happen July 3rd in Gothenburg, Sweden.

*A couple of notable rock names in the news this week with chatter about upcoming books to be released. As I mentioned in my WRWU vlog Duff McKagen announcing his bio will drop on October 11th. KISS will be putting together a new book exploring their early years (1972-1975 from the band's ALIVE tour). The band's even going so far as to reach out to fans that may have any press clippings, images, or artwork from said tour. Check out www.kissonline.com for more info. Marilyn Manson has tapped Erin Broadley, a former editor of L.A. Weekly, to pen his new official autobiography. Some people have asked and yes, Manson did have a bio put out in 1998 "The Long Hard Road Out of Hell". Chris Jericho, WWE Wrestler and front-man for Fozzy, put out a new book "Undisputed" recently and will be on the upcoming season of "Dancing with the Stars".

Thanks again for reading.
Feel free to comment.

Go Buy This Album...

Every once and a while a band comes along that really grabs a hold of me and I feel compelled to share with you guys. Kopek is one of those bands. Their debut album "White Collar Lies" dropped today. I'll admit. At first I thought, "hmm... it's not too bad." However, one good solid listen through and I thought, "Damn! This Sh!t Rocks!!" I've had friends and musicians, alike, take a listen to it and all have walked away saying they enjoyed it. Their sound is unique, their lyrics are honest and the hooks are solid!

Notable Tracks:
Fever
Love is Dead
Subhuman
The Easy Way (D.B. Cooper)
Love Sick Blues
Bigger Than Us All

And my personal favorite, Bring It On Home.
This clip can be found on their website http://www.kopekofficial.com/

If you're a Melvins fan keep an eye out for a thirteen-track live album "Sugar Daddy Live" that's set to drop on May 31st.

Motley Crue front-man Vince Neil said in an interview this week that his 15 day prison sentance might be "a little harsh". Sorry Vin but don't know if I can go to bat for ya hear, least we not forget the 1984 DUI accident that resulted in the death of Razzle Dingley, Hanoi Rocks drummer.

Staind front-man Aaron Lewis will perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live March 1st.

Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart are planning on releasing a collaborative album soon. This will be their first album since the late '60's when they worked together in The Jeff Beck Group. Beck has said he's cut some tracks and sent them Stewart's way and is awaiting his reply.

A new book detailing the stories behind every album Iron Maiden's ever produced will drop on May 2nd. It's titled "Iron Maiden: In the studio".

Thanks for giving me a couple-few minutes of your time.

Weekly Rock Wind UP Blog

Today's blog will probably be a short one as my head's spinning like I just got off some wicked satanic ferris wheel run by John Wayne Gacy... Here goes nothing.

New music news came out this week. Looks like Soundgarden, the Pixies, Serj Tankian and possibly A Perfect Circle are all working on new stuff.

Queens of the Stone Age announced a spring tour this week. There WILL be a stop in KC at The Beaumont Club on April 6th.

Sammy Hagar has a new book due out on March 15th. And surprise, surprise, he actually gushes about his time in Van Halen.

Original GnR lineup for next year's Super Bowl half-time performance? That's the rumor, but I highly doubt it. Although...

AC/DC's "Let There Be Rock" is coming out on Blu-ray June 7th. It'll be a limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo.

And in the does anyone really care department, Sebastian Bach heading back into the studio.

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog for 2.11

**Fans of Stone Sour will want to tune in to Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, February 16th, as the band will play, presumably, “Hesitate”.

**Speaking of Stone Sour and their front-man Corey Taylor, Duff McKagen bassist for Velvet Revolver was cryptic this week about whether or not Taylor would be replacing Scott Weiland as front-man for VR as well. When asked about it McKagen said, “I can neither confirm or deny… He is a bad dude though. I like him as a human being and a singer. He’s the voice of a whole new generation.”

**Original AC/DC front-man Bon Scott has sadly been gone since February of 1980 but some of his early, rare, recordings pre-DC days with his pre-DC band Fraternity will be released on the 22nd of this month.

**Glenn Danzig set to record an album of covers. This is a long talked about project that will include tributes to Elvis Presely and Black Sabbath. More details to follow.

**Disturbed postpones last handful of “Music as a Weapon V” dates as doctors have advised front-man Dave Draiman to take three weeks off, with no talking or singing, due to an adversely affected throat condition.

**Slash teams up with Supra footwear company to create a one-of-a-kind handmade pair of Skytops inspired by his love of snakes. He unveiled said shoes during his half-time performance during Super Bowl XLV.

**The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History recently acquired the Van Halen “Frank 2” guitar played and immortalized by legendary shredder Eddie Van Halen.

**Slipknot’s Clown launched a new official web site, www.apocalypticnightmare.com

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog 2/4

----Damn, not only did the Snow-gasm of 2011 usher in a sh!t-ton of snow it also, coincidentally, gave us a sh!t-ton of notable rock news.

**Bon Jovi calls it quits... for about the next two years. 'Jovi drummer Tico Torres told Rolling Stone magazine this week it's good to take some time off so your fans will want you back when you do return.

**The White Stripes OFFICIALLY called it quits.

**From the metal-minds that brought you "We Wish You A Metal XMas" comes a metal tribute album for old blues eyes, Frank Sinatra. Entitled SIN-atra, and due out on March 29th, various metal front-men provide their take on old Frank classics. Track listing is as follows:
01. New York, New York (Devin Townsend)
02. I've Got You Under My Skin (Glenn Hughes)
03. Summerwind (Geoff Tate)
04. It Was A Very Good Year (Dee Snider)
05. Witchcraft (Tim "Ripper" Owens)
06. Fly Me To The Moon (Robin Zander)
07. Lady Is A Tramp (Eric Martin)
08. I've Got The World On A String (Doug Pinnick)
09. Love And Marriage (Elias Soriano)
10. Strangers In The Night (Joey Belladonna)
11. High Hopes (Franky Perez)
12. That's Life (Jani Lane)
Here's Twisted Sister's Dee Snider doing "It Was A Very Good Year".

**Les Paul's ghost visits Pete Townshend? Seems last September while holed up in a Pittsburgh hotel room Townshend was awakened by "a dark figure sitting in the corner of the room hugging a perfectly gorgeous one-of-a-kind Gibson Les Paul guitar to his chest and shaking his head as if in mourning."  The story goes on that the figure told him "You have little respect for the instruments that made you famous. You must atone for your disrespect of the guitar or suffer the remainder of your life." Oh, it gets better... accordingly Townshend thought it was a robber and grabbed the closest weapon at hand and swung it at the apparition and hitting the table, chair and wall. Said weapon? An expensive Gibson Les Paul.

**Butch Vig, producer of Nirvana's smash album "Nevermind", is back in the producer's chair for the new Foo Fighters album featuring former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic on the track "I should Have Known". Vig stated this week that the song hits on an emotional nerve, "I'm not exactly sure what the song's about but to me, it seems there's definitely some references about Kurt Cobain, and it's one of the most primal, raw things the Foo Fighters have ever done... it's quite an emotional roller-coaster ride when you hear it." Also announced this week, April 12th is the slated release date for the new Foo Fighters album and sometime in the spring will be a new documentary about the Fighters of the Foo!

**Speaking of documentaries, word on the street is Kevin MacDonald has been hired to work on a film about reggae giant Bob Marley. Bob's son, Ziggy, is one of the executive producers and wanted MacDonald , according to The Hollywood Reporter. Filming will be on location in Jamaica, Ghana, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. and should be released sometime this year, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Marley's death in 1981.

**Even though the Black Crowes are on hiatus indefinitely that's not stopping front-man Chris Robinson from getting out on the road. His new band, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, will launch an all California run beginning March 28th and going through May 29th.

**Speaking of front-men out on their own, Rolling Stone's Mick Jagger will perform at the Grammy Awards next Sunday (2/13 on CBS). Jagger will pay tribute to late blues great Solomon Burke (who passed in October) and will be joined on stage by soul singer Raphael Saadiq and his band.

**Keep an eye out for all the Pearl Jam celebrations to be happening this year in honor of their 20th anniversary. Included will be a destination festival this summer, the release of Cameron Crowe's documentary on PJ, and the re-release of "Vs." and "Vitalogy" to be dropped on March 29th and will contain some rare recordings.

**Former Guns bassist Duff McKagen's band Loaded will be dropping their sophmore album "The Taking" on April 19th. Word on the street is the cover art and three songs were leaked! Soak it up while you can before it's asked to be taken down!

Duff McKagan's Loaded - Cocaine by Eagle Rock Entertainment

Duff McKagan's Loaded - We Win by Eagle Rock Entertainment

Duff McKagan's Loaded - Dead Skin by Eagle Rock Entertainment

**Lemmy, the documentary about Motorhead's infamous front-man,  finally hits Kansas City this weekend. Go Here for showtimes!

**And in closing for this week's WRWU blog, KISS original drummer and founding member Peter Criss announced this week he'll publish his book of memoirs in the fall of 2012 titled "Makeup to Breakup".

Foo News!

As many of you know I've got a non-sexual man crush on Mr. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. Same can probably be said for Foo's drummer, Taylor Hawkins, and nearly everyone else in the band... Including their triangle player.

So when I get this great band of news about the Foo's, it honors me to share with you all!

First, word on the street is the Foo's new album drops on April 12th. I've been playing about a 30 second clip on air showcasing, but a bit, of new Foo's.

On top of that, I posted a video of Mr. Grohl behind the scenes.

And now news out of Salt Lake City, Foo Fighter's full length documentary this spring as well! Directed by Oscar and Emmy winner James Moll, I suspect it will kill!

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog for 1/28

Thanks, once again, for reading my blog that accompanies my "Weekly Rock Wind Up" vlog.

Since I closed out my vlog with info about upcoming music and who's doing what I figured that would be a great place to start.

-The Boss, Bruce Springstein, is set to guest on Dropkick Murphy's forthcoming album "Going Out In Style". Right now the album is set to release on February 28th.

-Eagles founder Don Henley is working on an album of country covers. Word on the street is a lot of country heavy hitters will show up and it's his first solo recording since "Inside Job" in 2000.

-Korn being influenced by Soundgarden on their follow up to "Korn III: Remember Who You Are"? James "Munky" Shaffer, said recently, "We're definitely moving forward, we'll probably start recording in April to try and fine tune this sound we're developing".

-Slash and Billy Corgan contribute to Cherie Currie's new album, which is being produced by Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum. For those NOT in the know, Currie was the teenage lead vocalist of the all girl group The Runaways.

-Even though rumors had stated Judas Priest are pretty much through, it seems as if they still have a little left in the tank. According to guitarist Glenn Tipton's official web site a fair well world tour will be beginning this summer and "to put everyone's mind at rest, this is by no means the end of the band. In fact, we are presently writing new material, but we do intend this to be the last major world tour".

-And other noteable notes about bands working on new stuff;
Aerosmith, KISS and Van Halen. As all this info unfolds, I'll keep you in the loop!

-John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, is allowing 150 of Lennon's personal letters to be published in a single volume. As of now the expected release date will be October of this year, which is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' hit release "Love Me Do".

-Rush drummer, Neil Peart, will put out his fifth book "Far And Away: A Prize Every Time" on May 1st. (A$$hole Bob's ecstatic!)

Thanks again for giving me a minute of your time.

Weekly Rock Wind Up Blog!

The third week of January has produced more rock music news than can fit on one three minute video. Outside of what you've already seen here's some other notable news;

-Avenged Sevenfold announced their new drummer, who’ll be replacing Mike Portnoy who left Dream Theater, to fill in for The Rev who passed away a year ago but was subsequently dropped by A7X. And his name is… Arin Ilejay former drummer for a band called Confide.

-Ozzy's new Lipton Brisk Tea commercial has been released. In said commercial His Ozzness is a clay model in the same vein as Gumby. It's definitely one of those, "What the f**k" moments when you watch it.

-On Sunday night (1/16) Nine Inch Nails frontman and mastermind Trent Reznor won a Golden Globe for his work in the movie "The Social Network" and the score he provided. Once upon stage Reznor said, "A year ago I had no idea I'd have the opportunity to score a film. The idea of standing up here to accept this award is surreal." Congrats on your success Mr. Reznor.

-A new box set will be released that should have all Deadheads, sh*tting their pants. Featuring 22 concerts in their entirety from the jam band's 1972 European tour, the box set will consist of 60 CD's and run more than $400. On top of the box set keep an eye out for a new Grateful Dead video game.

-Slash (Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver) spoke out this week about possible Guns tunes showing up on the hit TV show "Glee" and saying it pretty much won't happen!

-Wanna hear new Foo? Follow this link!

-Led Zeppelin fans that have an iPhone/iPad can now download a new app, “This Day in Led Zeppelin”. Among the app features are a detailed list of every show Zeppelin played, a quiz with hundreds of questions, critiques of every track and a career overview of the group.

-System of a Down, who’ve been on hiatus since late-2006, have added another date to their Spring European tour thus bringing the total number of shows overseas to eleven. Does this mean new stuff and a US tour for SOAD? Only time will tell.

-Jeff Beck, but more importantly Les Paul, fans keep an eye out for a new DVD coming your way titled, “Jeff Beck: Rock’N’Roll Party Honoring Les Paul. Due out on February 22nd the DVD was filmed at the acclaimed Iridium Jazz Club, which is the same club where the legend, Paul, played weekly shows in the twilight of his life. Performing with Beck include; Imelda May and her band, Gary “U.S.” Bonds, and Brian Setzer to name a few.

-Iconic performer Cher made chart history in the world of pop music in the US by having another #1 song on the Billboard charts. While that might not seem like a stretch, it's the sixth decade in a row for her to do so. Her first US number 1 hit was "I Got You Babe" with then hubby-Sonny Bono.

-Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme died last year. WHAT?? Yep, according to Gibson.com, Homme was quoted as saying, "I had surgery on my leg and there were complications and I died on the table. I was in bed for three months." Although he was bedridden for three months, that's not stopping QOTSA from putting out a new album and the lads are saying it will most definitely be a rump shaker. Yeaaa to modern medicine!

-Congrats are in order for a pseudo-Kansas Citian in Melissa Etheridge. The Leavenworth native is slated to play pivotal role of St. Jimmy in the Broadway smash American Idiot. The play is based on the 2005 album of the same name by Green Day.

-And the sad news of the week was the passing of Don Kirshner, "The Man with the Golden Ear". Kirshner was instrumental in the publishing of some of the biggest music in the 60's and 70's. Some of his discoveries included, The Monkees, Bobby Darin, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, and The Archies. RIP-Don!

Thanks for watching and reading your Weekly Rock Wind Up!

CJ from Drowning Pool's Top 10 Places to Play!

Now you know we love playing any place, anytime and anywhere for all of our fans but these are the first 10 places that came to mind.

1. Texas!
I was going to say the home town of Dallas but the whole state rocks! We've been hitting every major city and small town in this state from day one so it's Texas as a whole!

2. Kansas City, MO
KC is like a second home to us. They have some of the most killer radio rock shows out there. And every year we always get to play at least one of them. Lots of great friends there and lots of good times. If you're passing through be sure to stop at the Mercy Seat for a great tat or Big Dudes for all your musical needs!

3. Michigan
Again another State where we spend a good week or so hitting every city. The rock fans there are awesome. KISS wasn't lying when they said Detroit Rock City!

4. Seattle, WA
As we all know this city has spawned some of the greatest bands out there and is a haven for music lovers. Not as depressing as you would think. Every time we hit the stage there the energy is intense and the air smells of some sort of incense I can't put my finger on. Hmmm I always leave hungry though.

5. Chicago, IL
Speaking of hungry Chicago definitely has some amazing food. We always have kick ass rock shows here. We actually lived in Chicago for about 3 months when we recorded our second CD with Johnny K. Tons of cool friends and Rock fans.

6. Las Vegas, NV
C'mon who doesn't love Vegas? I can't tell you what happens here because there's some sort of unwritten law that it has to stay here. So if you want to know. Get on a plane and come see the show.

7. Denver, CO
Very similar vibe to Seattle. Beautiful State. Killer Rock stations. Awesome laid back rock fans and that familiar smell of incense again. Hmmm

8. Phoenix, AZ
We've actually ended a few tours here and had the big last night blow out. Always a great time. Remember going there but don't remember leaving.

9. Florida
Yet again another state where we'll spend a week or two going around playing every city. Super cool Rock fans. Unfortunately the radio stations don't really care for us much there but we love them anyway for at least still playing rock music. Why the grudge? Honestly playing Florida is like a working vacation because most of the shows are close to the beach or next to some sort of resort related to a mouse with big ears.

10. Last but not least it's a tie between New York and Los Angeles
Two cities that couldn't be further apart from each other but have a very similar vibe. The rock fans that were born there and grew up there have the greatest attitude. The two cities are also the hub for the entertainment industry so we get to hang with our business peeps and our aspiring rock & roll actor friends.

So there it is. Like is said before we love playing anywhere & everywhere. If I left out your city it's not because it's not cool. Next time just run across the stage naked or set your head on fire. Do something crazy and I'll put you on the list next time!!

Take note of who's pitching for Ford Motor Company and let me know what you think!

Best Cover Song... Ever!

In today's world of music, songs are covered at a faster rate, it seems, than ever before. The latest one I can think of is Five Finger Death Punch's cover of Bad Company's "Bad Company". So I inquire to you, oh faithful readers of thy Blog/Topic, what is YOUR favorite cover song in the history of ever?

Need some ideas?
Besides the aforementioned number from 5FDP, Metallica's done a shitton of covers most notably on the 1998 double disc CD Garage Inc. Korn's covered Metallica and Pink Floyd. Johnny Cash has covered Nine inch Nails and "Hurt" along with Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage". Ya need more? OK, Disturbed's covered quite a few acts, The White Stripes have covered the country tune "Jolene", Hendrix covered Dylan with "All Along The Watchtower" and I'd be re-missed not to mention Limp Bizkit's cover of George Michael's "Faith". I know there's more out there, so please feel free to add to this list. Interaction on this piece isn't just encouraged, it's totally appreciated!

Rob Zombie/Alice Cooper last night in KC.

Actually in Independence at their Events Center. First time at the venue, first time seeing Alice Cooper and my first time seeing Rob Zombie. Enjoyed everything I saw, from my seats at IEC, to Alice's stage set-up and presentation. There's also no doubt in my mind that Zombie puts an immense amount of thought into his show, his stage set up, their attire and the pyrotechnics... HOLY SH...!

But I have a confession to make... if said show, came waltzing back into Kansas City I would not see it again. Not that I didn't have a good time, again, I have made respect for what those men have done, but I realized I'm not as much of a fan of their music as I perhaps thought I was. Maybe a good two, three, or four songs on the iPod and I'm full. Not to say I wasn't rocking back and forth or pumping my fist a time or two, but for the overall show there was no real WOW factor.

So bring on the retorts, the comments and the "Nivens! You don't know poop!" 'cause all I'm busting out is a simple opinion about the NEXT time they play.

I am, however, excited about checking out a Missouri Mavericks hockey match this year!

They're faking it!!!

Borrowed, verbatim, from these guys.

Women are still convincingly faking orgasms, according to a new wide-ranging Indiana University survey of Americans’ sex habits, with 85 percent of men believing their female partners climaxed in their most recent sex act, but only 65 percent of women actually doing so. The study also notes that men are now giving oral sex almost as frequently as they get it. About 60 percent of men of all ages masturbate once a month, until they reach 70, when that figure declines to 30 percent. By contrast, half of women in their 20s masturbated in the past month, and just 20 percent of women in their 60s did. The popularity of anal sex continues to rise—about 20 to 25 percent of people in the 1990s had had anal sex, now that number is around 40 percent, and even higher for people in their 20s and 30s. Researchers say this figure highlights the need for more public health education, because anal sex poses a higher risk for bacteria, viral, and sexual infections. The readily available porn on the Internet may be fueling the change in sexual behavior, researchers said.

So what do you think readers of my blog? Does this sound accurate? Do you think your girl's faking it? Or do you find him orally serving you more often?

The Town

Caught the new Ben Affleck flick last night, "The Town". Set in a rough part of Boston, Charlestown, Affleck and his gang of Bank Thieves pull off one impressive heist after another all the while he's desperately trying to leave that life behind. Toss in a love interest, a possible babies mama, and an FBI Agent hellbent on tracking this crew down and it is an explosive flick WELL worth the price of admission.

I made this statement prior to seeing it and I'll stand behind it, so long as Affleck can continue with movies like this; Ben Affleck is poised to be our generations Clinit Eastwood. Writer, Director, Actor of his own movies. Looking forward to seeing what he pulls out of his hat next.

Help Me Name My New Lil' Pussy.

Over the weekend a new addition seemed to make its way into our home in a 9 week old emaciated male kitten. He weighed only 1.07 lbs, eyes infected and shut, and was nearly dead. Probably wouldn't have made it through the weekend. After some Vet care, at Animal Medical Center in Waldo, and rest the little guy went from looking like this...

...To looking like this! (Note his smile)

He's full of energy, spunk and happiness... even if he only has one eye! And for those who've already asked, it was his left eye he lost. So now my question to you, oh faithful readers of thy blog, what do I name the little guy???

I'm Still Here

Friday night the little lady and I caught the new Joaquin Phoenix "Documentary" 'I'm Still Here'. Directed by JP's brother-in-law Casey Affleck, this was one hell of an onslaught of, "Holy Sh!t", "No Way", "Oh Man!", and "Dude? What is he doing?!". And in the end, it looks like, as Affleck stated, it's just one great piece of Gonzo film making that did exactly what it's supposed to do, get us to talk about it. Go see it. Ruse or not, it's pretty impressive that Phoenix assumed this character for almost two years to pull this off. More Borat than Punk'd, and totally bad ass. JP's the man! (The JP thing will make sense when you see it.)

So Much Rock News This Week.

Here's what didn't make my "Weekly Rock Wind Up" vlog above.

*Slash was in the news this week confirming reports that Velvet Revolver will be back. However, like many of us had hoped, it will not be with Myles Kennedy who's been out on the road with the legendary shredder. In fact, VR's drummer, Matt Sorum, had initially approached Slash about Myles before Scott Weilend came along and the band had hoped they could score him when Scott departed, unfortunately for them Kennedy stayed with Alter Bridge. Keep an eye out for AB's latest album to drop next month, ABIII.

*Nikki Sixx chatted it up this week about his upcoming book "This Is Gonna Hurt". His newest memoir will chronicles Sixx's experience from his early years, to his success with Motley Crue, his death from overdose and his getting clean and into his addictions with music, photography, and love.  Nikki fans mark March 22 of next year on your calendar, as that's the expected date of release. And in related Nikki Sixx news, Hernando High School teacher Jason Galitsky in Florida was reprimanded for including Nikki's first memoir "The Heroin Diaries" to his students. Seems superintendent Bryan Blavatt felt it's not a book high school students should be introduced to. Never mind there's other books that have dealt with incest, murder, and rapes... like the Bible... but, sometimes adults know best.

*Quiet Riot is back in business! When frontman Kevin DuBrow OD'ed in 2007 many, myself included, figured that was it for QR. Not the case as drummer Frankie Banali found a replacement in California-based Van Halen tribute band (the Hagar-era) frontman Mark Huff. A true Cinderella story, once DuBrow's mom gave them the green light, the band is back in business.

*On the 22nd of this month select theaters will be showing Slipknot's "(sic)nesses: Live at Download". And in a real sense of "Ain't that a bitch" not one theater in Kansas or Missouri is showing it. WTF?!?

*Rob Zombie is having the time of his life being out on tour right now with Alice Cooper. And he's involved with the Halloween Edition of ABC's "Extreme Makeover" where he has been working on the newly renovated haunted house at Salem, Oregon's Oregon School for the Deaf, which is used as the school's primary fundraiser.

*Ozzy, again, in the news this week having to cancel a concert this week in Oberhausen, Germany with a serious pulled muscle in his back. Doc's are ordering the Prince of Darkness to rest for 3 to 4 days in order for him to undergo ultrasound treatment. And Ozzy's wife, Sharon, spoke out this week about an excerpt from the forthcoming Vince Neil memoir, "Tattoo's & Tequila" in which Neil states Sharon is the "most evil, shittiest, woman I've ever met in my life" and that she "would fucking have you killed if it was to her advantage." The Princess of Darkness stated she was "absolutely heartbroken" and that Neil was "the murderer, not me. He has murdered somebody in a car. He crippled two other people and he is still driving drunk. And that is why I used to keep my husband away from him. And if that makes me a bad person, then I am a bad person."

*Congrats to The Black Crowes who were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. It's been 20 years since their debut album "Shake Your Moneymaker" and the lads will be doing so on their current tour which commences with a six night run in San Francisco at The Fillmore, December 12-19. Road trip?

*And finally, Marilyn Manson's "Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll" was shut down by the studio behind the project after a negative reaction to the movie's intensely violent and very Mansonesque trailer. I've attached it below, but be warned NSFW and scoot the kiddies out of the room.

Did Robert Plant really say that?!?

News has surfaced this week that Robert Plant, legendary frontman for Led Zeppelin, will be updating a version of his old, pre-Zeppelin band, Band of Joy. Said group also featured the late John Bonham and will likely write some original material after releasing a cover album.

When interviewed about this Plant said, "It's all very well celebrating other people's songwriting, and I know there are artists who actually have an entire career doing that, whether it be Elvis or Sinatra..."
Uhmmmm.... Yeah Rob, it's also called Led Zeppelin, yo! I know Zeppelin's the biggest rock band to ever hit the planet, but we all also know that most of their stuff was taken from Robert's love of the Blues, right?

Let's see how many songs we can list of LZ that came from "celebrating other people's songwriting" as Mr. Plant stated.
I'll start:
-Whole Lotta Love

The Electric Cigarette

So the new craze out there seems to be the electric cigarette. Many people I know from my girlfriend to all the guys in Red Line Chemistry have 'em. My question is; how many of you have used it or own it? And do we even know what, if any, long term effects it can have on you?

Guns-N-Roses Live at Rock N' Rev Festival

G-n-R, which as we all know by now is really just Axl plus a bunch of dudes, played at the Rock N' Rev Festival at Sturgis last week. This marked Guns first time performing stateside in four years and although they didn't go on until 1 A.M., "technical difficulties" was the reason given, the crowd seems to be pretty excited by what they're witnessing. My trip to NYC! (with photos)

Greetings out there in blog-reading-land! Thanks for taking the time to read over my trek to New York City. Keep in mind. I was there for 8 days... so it might be a tad lengthy.

I thought my trip was doomed from the get go. I was supposed to fly from KC to Chicago, for a small layover, and then off to New York. Well... seemed I couldn't do that 'cause all flights to Chi-Town were cancelled because of flooding. Inside my brain you can imagine the yell of "Nooooooooo" that I was hearing. Luckily I was able to fly into Dallas, then NYC. So all was not lost as I still got to New York in a decent time. I stayed with F'Em Up Chuck and his wife. We had dinner and then Chuck and I rolled out to throw back a couple few beers. Some years back, five almost six, my friend Amy moved to NYC. When I got in on Saturday we texted each other about meeting up. She was out to dinner with some friends and wasn't gonna be able to make it. "No worries" we said to one another and promised to meet up later on that week. About 11:00 PM or so inside of a bar called Solider McGee's Amy and her friends roll in. Total happenstance. Total coincidence. We were both pretty dumbfounded how it all went down as you can clearly see from this photo! And yes, that's my hat.

The next day was pretty chill with Chuck, his wife and I having ourselves a nice little breakfast before he and I went down to Chinatown to do some shopping. If you've ever been to Chinatown you know the one thing you do every time is haggle. When they say $20 you say $10 and usually you'll win or meet somewhere in the middle. This year was different man. Those cheap bastards down there were not having any of it. $20 meant $20. $10 meant $10. $20 and why don't you throw in a pair of $5 sunglasses? NO! $25 total! And we wonder why China's owning everything in America right now. That night was pretty chill. A few drinks with friends at Broadway Dive and a call to end the night early.

On Monday I went with Chuck into his work at Citadel. He's not on air up there, like he was here, rather he's the Head of their Digital Department. That afternoon I met up with a friend of mine Jennie Mae who lives here in KC but was visiting NYC too. After snacking a bit we decided upon seeing the movie Inception. I won't spoil it for you, but I will say if you're a Christopher Nolan fan (The rebooting of the Batman franchise. Memento) you'll wanna see this flick. I, for one, think Leonardo DiCaprio is really turning into an amazing actor and the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pretty slamming as well. After a taco dinner at Casa de Armstrong (F'Em Up's) Chuck and I went to a swanky Asian Bistro to meet up with Roxy Myzal, Lou Brutus's producer for Hard Drive. Chuck and I both walked out two hours later just mesmerized by the stories she had to tell and the people she's known in her thirty or so years in Rock Radio. We both felt pretty lucky for getting the opportunity to hang with her.

Tuesday morning I met up with Sleepy, a former sales dude for us here in Kansas City, who's now selling radio in NYC at CBS. We snagged a quick bite and made plans for that evening for all of us to do dinner. That afternoon I audited a acting class at the Stella Adler School of Acting from Antonio Merenda. In the "it's a small world" category his brother is our General Sales Manager at the Rock, Nic Merenda. After all of us had dinner and hung for a bit; Chuck, his wife, and I made our way back to their next of the woods on the Upper West Side. A friend of mine, Tico, from grade school got in touch with me and I met him, his fiance and their friend, a woman with a man's name-Martie, at a smokey old Jazz Club called Merchants. In New York City, like Kansas City, you can't smoke in bars but some how this place got Grandfathered in to be able to. We all had a blast and called it quits only when Tico and I realized his wife-to-be and her friend were plowed!

I got some much needed rest and slept in on Wednesday. My breakfast, which was around 1:30 in the afternoon, was in SoHo at a place called Boom. It was spaghetti... which is what I ate most of while in New York. After feasting I ventured out to do some shopping. Picked up 2 super dope jackets for $100 and toured the Highline, which is an old rail line convered into a park with spectacular views of the city.

After a couple few hours downtown I made my way back to Chuck's and we got ready for Tom Petty at Madison Square Garden with Buddy Guy. Show was phenomenal and the seats were pretty solid. I hadn't seen Petty since 1994 but I will say the guy's still got it. And Buddy Guy... Seriously, the voice of God!!

Slept in again on Thursday before venturing back down, again, into Chinatown and SoHo. Picked up a couple of New York sweatshirts for $10 a pop, some cool t-shirts from Yellow Rat Bastard and had lunch at a bar started in 1847! The bartender was a dude named Johnny, from England, thus I dubbed him "English Johnny". Real cool cat who'd been all over the world slinging drinks but has aspirations of being in radio. That evening Chuck and I caught Steve Earle at City Winery. Oh, before I forget we ate at a joint prior to called The Ear Inn. A house built prior to 1812 that's been many things and is now a pub. Talk about character! Earle was amazing. Chuck got his autograph. The night ended well.

Friday; Chuck and I ventured to Bryant Park with Roxy, after seeing a 3 piece Mariachi band on the subway, to have lunch with her and Mark Abrams of Road Runner Records. Had a blast with them, talking rock music, life in the city, and taking in a serene setting for two hours. Oh, I also met Lou Dobbs who works in the same place as Roxy. Much taller than I expected. That evening Chuck and I met up with Sleepy in the West Village. F'Em Up took off early and Sleepy bailed out shortly after. By this time it was just a little after midnight and there was no way in hell I was gonna call it! I ventured not too far from where Nick (Sleepy) resides to an area off Stone Street and into a pub called Ulysses. Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind was playing as I walked in. Figured it'd suffice for the night, and it did.

Woke about 10:30 on Saturday, after watching the sun rise over the buildings of lower Manhattan while smoking a cigarette. To say I might have still been a bit drunk or was mildly hungover would be an understatement! None the less, Sleepy and I had a great breakfast, at Cercle Rouge in Tribecca, before I ventured back to Chuck's to organize my stuff, stroll around Central Park, and wait for a call from my buddy from earlier in the week; Tico. After saying my goodbyes to Chuck and his wife I climbed in a taxi and headed to Queens/Astoria. Went out with Tico, his soon-to-be wife Jen and her roommate.  After some dinner and drinks at a Mexican joint, we stepped in for a brief moment to a place called Dillinger's for one more before calling it a night.

I crashed out on their futon, boarded my plane on time in NYC and made my way back to KC with no fuss or muss. As much as I tried to hold the seconds at bay while in NYC, the eventual end had to come and bring me back home to you Kansas City. All in all, I'd say this was one of my best vacations ever!

Understanding the drama that is G-n-R!

This month has produced more twists and turns in the saga that is Guns-n-Roses than Joan Rivers has had plastic surgery...

Here's the article from the LA Times about Front Line Management's Lawsuit:

Front Line Management is suing Guns N’ Roses front man Axl Rose for about $1.8 million in management commissions Front Line claims the singer owes for recent performances across Asia, Canada and South America.

Front Line Management is suing Guns N’ Roses front man Axl Rose for about $1.8 million in management commissions Front Line claims the singer owes for recent performances across Asia, Canada and South America.

Front Line’s suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, states that around August 2008 the company entered into an oral agreement to represent Rose as his personal manager, and that the company has not been paid the 15% commission that Rose agreed to pay stemming from performances that grossed nearly $12.5 million.

Rose could not be reached immediately for comment.

A Front Line spokesman said Thursday that the filing “speaks for itself” and company officials would have no further comment.

Front Line is the heavyweight management firm headed by industry veteran Irving Azoff, who also is executive chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, the new industry giant created by the recent merger of the Ticketmaster ticketing firm and the Live Nation concert promotion and facility management company.

One would think it's pretty cut and dried... well in the world of Axl Rose, nothing is really cut and dried as this article from TMZ shows:

Rose just filed a counter suit against Azoff -- his former manager -- claiming Azoff tried to strong-arm Rose into a reunion tour with the original members of GNR. When Rose nixed the idea on the heels of the Chinese Democracy tour last year, Azoff did everything he could to screw Axl ... so he claims.

Among other things, Rose claims Azoff tried "devising and implementing a secret plan to set up Rose and the band for failure so that Rose would have no choice but to reunite with the original Guns N' Roses' members."

Rose believes Azoff was so vicious he even used Axl's childhood name -- something that carries heavy emotional baggage -- when he filed the initial lawsuit for commissions. Rose says the name William Bailey "carries significant emotional damage from Rose's childhood" and that Azoff knew it because of numerous personal and confidential conversations.

Rose is countersuing for $5 mil minimum.

UPDATE: The gloves are off! Azoff just took a shot at Axl by releasing the following statement: "On advice of counsel I cannot respond at this time, but will discuss in my upcoming book, 'My Life with William Bill Bailey.'”

I'd be suing old band mates and manager's too if my name was Bill Bill Bailey!!!

My thoughts on this years Rockfest!

Since my mind's cleared up a bit and my body isn't nearly as sore and mangled as I've been the last couple days, a few days after Rockfest, I decided to share with you a couple few of my favorite memories from this year "Party in the Park".

First, for me, even before the rain and mud is the fact I worked this year's party. If you recall I had been downsized prior to last year's Rockfest due to corporate wide budget cuts that went down across the country. To be part of this years, working, felt soooo good!!!

The mud and rain were ridiculous, no doubt. What amazed me and always amazes me about you guys is how well all get along. Not to say that when you get 55,000 people together you won't get a some people who don't care much for each other. But the reality is that everyone gets along and knows why they're their... TO ROCK!

Laughed my ass off when Taddy Porter's front man said, "Wanna give a shout out to Ninety Eight Point Six!" Yeah... the natives did not like that and I was for certain were about to riot. He quickly realized the error of his way and corrected himself. The fans took note and didn't pillage the stage.

How about 7 mosh pits during Drowning Pool's Bodies!!

Of all the interviews I did my favorite was with Rev Theory. We had a blast and I'm certain Ty saved our asses in the studio by hitting the dump button when Matty dropped an F bomb!

My interview with Sully and Shannon, from Godsmack, was hysterical in the fact that Sully clearly didn't wanna be there. I understand. You're tired and it's raining and your iPhone is obviously more exciting than I! But what I loved most about it was asking him point blank, with my final question while sporting my NY ball cap, "How does it feel to know you were just interviewed by a Yankee fan?" Sully looked up at me and said, "I can't look at you bro! That's why I'm not even talking to you!" Then he took off his headphones and got up from the table. Needless to say, we didn't take a photo together. (If ya don't know, Sully's a Boston Fan. Ha!!)

I'd hoped to watch the fireworks from my rooftop loft, but didn't make it home in time and had to catch them while standing in front of the doors to Union Station.

Again, thanks sooo much to all of you who came, saw, conquered and ROCKED!

See ya again next year!

Statement from Mayor Funkhouser in regards to Rockfest

Latest news from the Mayor's Office

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 18, 2010

Statement from Mayor Funkhouser: Rockfest Should Rock On

Parks are for people, and on a rainy Saturday, Penn Valley Park was used by 55,000 Kansas City area residents and out-of-town visitors.

I think we should celebrate that kind of success, not condemn it. Keeping people out of our parks makes no sense to me.

My office has received a substantial number of calls and emails regarding Parks and Recreation Commissioner Aggie Stackhaus’ comments about last weekend’s Rockfest event. Most of the residents who have contacted us are disappointed in Commissioner Stackhaus’ comments about the participant’s manners, and her statement that the event should not return to Penn Valley Park.

Rockfest is a Kansas City spring institution. Like The Brookside Art Fair and the Zona Rosa Easter Parade, it is something that a significant segment of our residents look forward to every year. Community events give us a sense of place. They give us a reason to call Kansas City home.

I fully support Rockfest as one of those events. I support the young men and women who see Rockfest as an anchor for their community. Kansas City needs more fun and entertaining events.

Crowded parks, mixed with an all-day rain, are bound to cause serious landscaping issues no matter what the event. Those issues went even further due to the exuberance of the crowd. But outside of having some fun in the mud, the crowd is reported to have been very peaceful.

The bottom line is that grass will grow again. But residents driven away by overzealous comments may not return.

It is my understanding that AEG-Live has the responsibility to fix the issues caused last weekend, and that they already are moving in that direction and plan to have new seed or sod down soon. I will make sure that the city holds them to that commitment.

I, for one, hope that Rockfest continues to grace the Liberty Memorial and Penn Valley Park for years to come. And to show my support, I have joined the Facebook Petition to Keep Rockfest at Liberty Memorial. http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=122660207754171&ref=mf

Hot Tub Time Machine vs. The Hangover...

If you go back a few months to my Vlog review of The Hangover, you know I didn't find that movie anywhere near as funny as all those who said it's the best comedy since Superbad.

I did, however, find HTTM meeting and exceeding all my expectations. Cusack's timing is fantastic; Rob Corddry continues with his elaboration on the prick funnyman  he showed in "What Happens in Vegas"; Craig Robinson's Eric Webber was perfect, and young dude Clark Duke provided just the right disconnect of those who didn't live in the 80's to those who remember the 80's.

Which brings me to Crispin Glover. One of the biggest names of the 80's, showing up in a movie about traveling back to the 80's?! Nailed it!! And of course the antagonists to our heros, who all could have been in Johnny's gang from Karate Kid... so long as their not fighting the red scare of course.

Wonderfully awesome script and original story, incredibly funny 80's references that were blatantly obvious and some that were subtle, "I want my two dollars!", in conjunction with a solid cast helped seal the deal for me that Hot Tub Time Machine takes the smack talk title in a street fight win over The Hangover!
Great White Buffalo... Great White Buffalo... Great White Buffalo...

Slash is for Team CoCo!

On Tuesday (4/6) legendary shredder Slash showed up on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. If you look closely, however, I think he would have preferred that the show be hosted by Conan O'Brien.

STP show in Milwaukee!

By now you've probably heard we got super lucky here in KC when STP rolled into the Midland Theater recently. Sure we had to wait over an hour from their anticipated start time, but it could have been worse. Here's just a few comments below taken from Below Empty

LoungeFly77: The other reviews are accurate regarding STP's concert at the Rave. The band came out pretty early, which is atypical. I was only a few feet from Weiland's mic for most of the show, so his slip-ups with Sex Type Thing, Dead & Bloated, and Lounge Fly were noticeable. Ironically, other than a few guilty smiles, he didn't seem to notice at all.

Spoonman67: Scott was wasted. The show started off OK and steadily declined as it went on. This had everything to do with Scott (not the band). It was quit pathetic and me and my friends left completely discusted. It was evident the band was upset with Scott's behavior. I will never pay my hard earned cash to see them again. Scott will wind up another dead rock star who couldn't get his act together. Pretty sad for such a great talent.

ejsme: To me, Scott seemed intoxicated throughout the show. Seemed drunk or I thought maybe the pain pills because of the heel. He did keep sipping on some beverage throughout the show, but I don't know what it was. Although he sounded really slurry and rambling when talking between songs, he actually did a great job for most of the show. It was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. And the DeLeos didn't seem mad at him or anything. Dean actually came up and played his guitar with the neck stuck between Weiland's legs at one point.

But... once they got to Dead & Bloated, partway in, Scott got completely lost and just seemed to forget the whole song, lyrics and melody. They tried to kind of go into a little jammy part to cover until they could get their bearings, but it just kind got more and more off track and Scott never seemed to be able to pick back up. So, Dean walks off to the side and switches guitars and they go into LoungeFly. Dean walked up to Scott and took out his ear monitor and said something into his ear.

STP at the Midland!

After waiting over an hour from their anticipated start time of 9:30PM, STP finally came out swinging at 10:30 Monday night at the Midland to a room full of applause (which was odd cause there was a bounty of BOO's prior to). None the less, Stone Temple Pilots captured the crowd almost immediately with their opener of Vaseline. A definite crowd favorite. In fact it was mostly old tunes for the first half of the show. I made this statement on air and I'll stick by it on here; not certain if Scott's sober or not as he exhibited signs he was not completely centered but he did do a stand up job for what I saw.

Mad love to F'Em Up Chuck who I prepartied with and Chuck from Atlantic Records that picked me up a couple cold ones!

It's with a heavy heart I share this truth with you...

Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crocked Vultures, All Around Awesome Dude) is an addict. This video, sadly, proves the grim reality. Let's all learn from this and Dave know, I still have a non-sexual man crush on you.

Thanks Jovi, the memories were great.

Or was it the Mommy's were great!
Good Lord was it Bon Jovi MILF's Gone Wild last night at the Sprint Center. My friend, Janae, and I got there right at the start of the show and stayed for the entire performance (minus ducking out for a beer run twice) and I gotta give it the the boys from Jersey, they rocked the place. What I found funny... well a couple things. First was during the staples, Bad Medicine, Runaway, etc, the crowd got into it note for note. However, when a new tune came on and the crowd really didn't know it, a lot of texting a photo uploading to facebook. The best part, for us, was the row of about 10 suburbia moms in front of us reliving their old college/high school days. Wow, were they smashed and left a giant moat of beer at our feet. Way to stay classy Ma! :) All in all, I had a blast and can now scratch the Jovi off my list of bands to see!

Smashing Pumpkins Holding Try Outs

Taken directly from www.smashingpumpkins.com

With the news that THE SMASHING PUMPKINS bassist Ginger Pooley has left the band to raise her new baby with her husband, BILLY CORGAN has announced that he will look for a new bassist in the same manner as he found new drummer Mike Byrne last year: via an open audition process (see below for details). CORGAN also says that auditions will be held (again, see below) for a new keyboardist who is a fan of--and can play in the prog-rock style of--Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman.

Until a new bassist is found, Mark Tulin of The Electric Prunes--with whom BILLY toured last year in Spirits In The Sky--will fill in on an interim basis. Look for The Pumpkins to soon announce a world tour including dates in the U.S.

Says Ginger, who toured the world with the band in 2007 and 2008: "With sorrow and yet with much thankfulness for the opportunity to have played in the Pumpkins, I am sad to say that I can no longer tour with the Pumpkins. Although I've been blessed beyond belief over the past few years through playing with the Pumpkins, my priority now is to keep our little family unit together, which includes my husband and my baby. Although I do plan on continuing to do music in different forms, my priority is for neither for my husband nor myself to be apart from our daughter so that we can raise her together. I wish Billy all the best and look forward to seeing the Pumpkins in the near future. I would also like to thank all of the Pumpkins fans for all of their support. I will see you at the Pumpkins shows!"

Says BILLY: "Although I am heartbroken that Ginger is leaving the group, I really respect her decision to put her family first. I appreciate everything that she has contributed to The Smashing Pumpkins, and I'm proud of her for being such a great musician and friend.

"We were lucky enough to find drummer Mike Byrne through an open audition process," BILLY adds, "so why not open the doors again to anyone who might be interested for the bass or keyboard position. As you can see from our past and present, age, race, or a person's background is not an issue. Everyone is truly welcome to audition."

Audition Info:
Bassists and keyboardists looking to play with The Pumpkins should send their background info (including age, a resume of any bands/recorded work), photos and performance web links via email only, either to pumpkinsbass@gmail.com or pumpkinskeys@gmail.com. Note: only musicians with video clips can be considered. Youtube.com type posts are perfect--that's how Mike was found. Final date for submission is March 31st.

Alice in Wonderland Review...

As of right now. This very moment. March 8th, 2010 AD and less than 24 hours after viewing Alice in Wonderland at the Mainstreet AMC Theater I'm not all that impressed with Tim Burton's take on the Lewis Carroll classic.

There is a definate WOW factor when one watches this movie with the 3-D glasses on but once that fades you're left with a movie that just, for me, didn't live up to what I was wanting to see.

Now maybe, I'm a sucker for the older cartoon one. Maybe if I were to watch it again I'd have a better feeling for it. Maybe I'm just being old and grumpy, but for now I'm not a fan.

Here we are in the middle of February...

And I'm still rolling without a car. Sure there've been some days where it's sucked balls... and not the good kinda suck balls but the real sh!tty kind of suck balls. However, I can unequivocally state I'm happy to have ridden myself of my little green truck and depending on the bus/taxis to tote me around town. Makes me feel like a bonafide urbanite. Here's to seeing the Spring time from the back of the bus!

Insert Joke Here...

Oh how I love frivolous lawsuits in America!
This one comes out of the NYC:

It seems a Delaware man, Gerard Wall, is suing Larry Flynt's Hustler Club in Manhattan alleging that after being "provided with two alcoholic beverages" a lap dancer took Mr. Wall into a private room. 90 minutes passed and Gerard has no clue what happened next, except for a credit card charge of $21,620.60!

Two things here:
1st) Wife found the charge on the bill, and this is the best defense he can come up with?
2nd) When did we start tipping dancers in change?
"Here ya go honey!  Here's a $1.57!  Show daddy what you got!!"

Movie/Music idea for thee...

Last week I watched an indie flick called "Humpday". I've read and seen great reviews for it and have had it on in the DVD collection for a while. Without giving away too much of the story; two old friends (dudes) are at a party, hear about this film festival that turns porn into art and dare each other into having sex on camera. It's filmed in what's known as mumblecore and is a pretty damn funny flick. Definitely recommend it.

Today, I'm saying, dive into the Sex Slaves from NYC. Found these guys via Myspace a few years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed what they've put out. Rumor has them coming into KC sometime in the New Year. I'll keep ya posted.

Houston... I have a problem!

It seems a small baggie of cocaine was found in the shuttle Discovery's hangar at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. One can only suspect what it'd be like to try and chop a line in zero gravity!

One small step for man, one giant... SNNNOOORRRTTT!... WOW!!... FOR MANKIND!

Can you imagine what happens to the astronauts when they run out? What are they going to do, call their dealer? "Hey man, seriously, I'll make it worth your while. Get a hold of a Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines, tell him we'll meet you guys half way! C'mon man. Hook me up, I'm dying up here!"

I know in order to even conceive the idea of traveling into space someone or a group of people had to be hopped up on something, but this is just too funny. In fact the article I have from MSNBC states, "Discovery is slated to blast off from the Kennedy Space Center in March to deliver supplies and spare parts to the Internation Space Station." I want to be part of that party!

Jesus F**k, what a morning.

Ali, my girl, stayed home because she's sick. New dog took a crap in the hallway around 8:30 because it seemed like such a great spot. Didn't tell us, warn us, or anything. Just popped a squat! After picking that up and mopping, Rafi, our other dog, laid down some wicked diarrhea. After cleaning that up she puked everywhere. OK, I can handle this. Wait, what's that sound? Is that Harland Williams in Dumb & Dumber making that click, click sound when he takes a swig of piss out of a beer bottle? No; it's Chong, our cat, spittin up a furball on the only rug we have in our loft. It was a nice rug too. Really tied the room together & ALL OF THIS BEFORE NOON!

This past weekend/Monday's Movie&Music Choice

Greetings all in the world wide web of blogging, vlogging, YouTubing... and any other ING you wanna partake in on the net. Today I'm giving you a 2-for-1 special on thy blog. AND all for the low, low price of.... your time for reading.

WHOA!!

Let's begin with what all went down over the weekend.
Friday: Caught live/local music at Crosstown Station (1st time there/Saw The Belated/Had a blast) then caught a lift down to O'Dowd's on the Plaza to catch some more live music. Took a taxi home and crashed out until mid-Saturday morning.

Saturday: In order to curb my slight hangover I walked across the street to a new joint in the Crossroads called Hamburger Mary's. Had a Bloody Mary (Hair of the dog) and ordered up a burger with bacon on it, loaded with the necessary toppings including an onion ring. It was sick (good)! Threw down on an On Demand rental of Public Enemiesand then welcomed a new pet into our little clan; a red boned coon named Blue. He's a great pup and is immediate best friends with Rafi. http://www.petshalfwayhome.com/ Plenty of pups who need good homes!

I also got some Tat work done, drank some beer, watched a smidge of the Cardinals/Packers game with friends at our place and enjoyed a DVD I hadn't seen in a couple few years, Sessions for Rober J. Which leads me to...

Today's Music&Movie Choice:
Sessions for Robert J. Eric Clapton rallys up a band of musicians and explains his love for the Blues and the influence Robert Johnson had on him as a performer. You'll be surprised at how many tunes Johnson did you know from being covered by other artist.

Friday's Music/Movie Choice

Probably comes from a surprising place for some of you and that's U2's Rattle and Hum. This documentary was filmed after the massive success of The Joshua Tree and evokes in me a couple few tear drops every time I watch it. Sober or a little wrecked I always find myself amazed at this video and soundtrack.

Another face to say no too!

UPDATE! UPDATE! GINSENG HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

There's still tons of pups who need homes, and sadly this place is a Kill Shelter. In order to make room, they'll have to put some pups down.

Here's another pup you probably shouldn't save from being put down because where they are isn't a No Kill Shelter. Yeah, saving its life wouldn't be good for your Karma.

Today's Movie/Music Choice...

Greetings all!

One of my New Year's Resolutions, and we've all got a sh!t-ton I'm sure, is to provide you the faithful listener/reader with a daily suggestion of a Movie to watch or a CD to listen to. Mind you these are only suggestions by me and do not represent the opinions of Entercom/98.9 The Rock/A-Hole Bob/Johnny/T-Bone/Jake/Gregg/Carrie/Moose/Ryan/Chuck/Any Part-timers/The States of Kansas or Missouri/any County within our listening area or my mom.

NOW; that being said... let's proceed to the Movie:

A Perfect Getaway staring Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez. Perhaps you've seen the preview. A couple is enjoying their Honeymoon in Hawaii when fear strikes them in the form of a murder on an island one over from them and the killers may or may not be now on their island. I enjoyed this movie as you're constantly trying to piece it all together before you're forced to piece it together. See if you can follow along and guess its ending. 2 outta 3 m/

Onto the music; New Tales to Tell: A Tribute To Love & Rockets. I recall a couple few of these songs from the actual L&R's days, most notably So Alive covered by Better Than Ezra, but this collaboration of artists; Black Francis, The Flaming Lips, and Puscifer just to name a few, really bring these songs to life with their own flair and show just how important Love & Rockets were in helping to shape music over the years. 3 outta 3 m/
Recommended Tracks:
All In My Mind, I Feel Speed, So Alive, Sweet F.A.

What do you remember most from '09?

So many memories stand out from '09 for me. The crippling economy on my job (I was downsized in April), being brought back to The Rock in October (really enjoyed that one). Being a guest at Rockfest and not working at it (see previous April comment). Moving into a new loft with an amazing view of downtown! All the stellar shows at the Midland Theater (I'm talking to you Leonard Cohen). Going out to LA in March and seeing an old Buster Keaton silent movie with legendary pianist Bob Mitchell performing alongside (RIP dear sir). And of course my arrest on my 3rd week back at the Rock in October (thanks again City of Mission of setting me straight).

I now open the floor to you beloved listeners and readers of this here blog. What memories of '09 do you have. Good or Bad. I'm curious to know.

UPDATE!!!What Rage Against The Machine is up to.

So Rage is in a tight battle against the TV show's X Factor winner Joe McElderry's version of Miley Cyrus's The Climb for Britain's No. 1 Christmas single. This video showcases what's going on as well as their song that's in the race. And an added bonus. This presentation ran on the BBC. Rage promised them they'd drop the F-Bombs that close out the song. Needless to say, they didn't! High Five!

Rage Against the Machine humbles Simon Cowell
By GREGORY KATZ Associated Press Writer

LONDON (AP) - A grass-roots Facebook campaign has spoiled American Idol mogul Simon Cowell's Christmas by denying one of his new acts the prestigious Christmas No. 1 spot in Britain.

Thanks to a Facebook campaign that capitalized on growing unhappiness with Cowell's cookie-cutter approach to pop stardom, the antiestablishment Rage Against the Machine came out ahead of Joe McElderry, winner of Cowell's popular "X Factor" TV competition.

The upset for the heavily favored McElderry represents a setback for Cowell, who has made millions on both sides of the Atlantic for his roles in "American Idol," "X Factor," "Britain's Got Talent" and other productions.

Rage Against the Machine finished first with a surge of support for their 1992 hit "Killing in the Name," which became the first Christmas No. 1 in Britain supported only by downloads.

The Facebook campaign was organized by an English couple Jon and Tracy Morter in a concerted effort to break Cowell's recent stranglehold on the holiday No. 1 song, a traditional source of status and bragging rights inside Britain.

"Rage Against the Machine was built for moments like this," the band's guitarist Tom Morello told The Associated Press. "We are honored to have the song that liberated the U.K. pop chart."

"Killing In The Name" surged in the last days of the competition to sell more than 500,000 copies in the past week, compared with sales of 450,000 for McElderry's single. It also set a record for most downloads in a single week. Morello said the band would donate the profits to the British homeless charity Shelter.

McElderry, a talented, baby-faced singer who is just 18, was gracious in defeat. He emphasized his satisfaction at winning last week's X Factor finals, which shot him from obscurity to national prominence.

"Fair play to the guys who have organized the Facebook campaign - it's been exciting to be part of a much-hyped battle and they definitely deserve congratulations," he said.

McElderry said he was "delighted" to have his debut single - The Climb - in the charts. The CD is prominently displayed in hundreds of British shops.

"It's been such an incredible couple of months, and I got the best Christmas gift I could ever have asked for in winning The X Factor," he said.

The Facebook campaign on behalf of Rage Against the Machine attracted nearly 1 million followers on Facebook, many of whom were exasperated with the way the winner of the X-Factor has dominated music charts in the run up to Christmas.

Morello said the campaign had delivered "a crushing defeat for bland pop music."

"There are other ways to make music than to stand in front of a panel and perform like a circus bear," Morello added. "Free expression, uncompromising content are sitting on top of the U.K. pop chart this week."

The list of past Christmas No. 1 winners includes the Spice Girls, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and perennial British favorite Cliff Richard, who triumphed with The Shadows in 1960 and again as a solo act in 1988.

Is the title of an old children's song I found in my collection of Victrola Records dated sometime in the early 1900's from The Pet Bubble Book . I've recorded it and attached the lyrics below so you can follow along.

Enjoy!

I LOVE LITTLE PUSSY

I love little Pussy,
Her coat is so warm;
And if I don't hurt her
She'll do me no harm.
So I'll not pull her tail,
Nor drive her away,
But Pussy and I
Very gently will play.

She will sit by my side,
And I'll give her some food;
And she'll love me because
I am gentle and good.

I'll pat little Pussy,
And then she will purr,
And thus show her thanks
For my kindness to her.

I'll not pinch her ears,
Nor tread on her paw,
Lest I should provoke her
To use her sharp claw;
I never will vex her,
Nor make her displeased,
For Pussy don't like
To be worried and teased.

The New Voyeuristic Crack...

Or maybe the title of this blog could be called, "Better than Rock of Love".
I never thought a Reality TV show would come along that would be a greater train wreck than VH1's Rock of Love; Oh whom I kidding, I knew it would surface it was just a matter of time.
Well, that time is now with MTV's Jersey Shore.
Holy Sh!t is this not an amazingly awesome, supremely trashy show?!?
Watch the preview below:

I just happened to watch this preview yesterday and last night around 11PM they rerun the first episode, from what I've understood as 2 2 Hour debut shows, last night on MTV. And let me tell you, it was brutal! NY Mag online even posted their Top 10 catch phrases from the show.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go set the DVR to record the entire series.

Running Blog from Harrah's VooDoo Lounge

Tonight I'm running the music for some MMA Fights at Harrah's VooDoo Lounge brought to us by The Blue Corner. I've hijacked their wireless, got a nice frothy beer and am bringing to you a running blog/updated results from the throwdowns.

First fight saw Jake Thorton victorious over Mike Atkins. The 2nd bout saw Jeremy Greene defeat Eric Mosqueda. Our third match up had Danny Mainus over Kevin Membrino. The 4th fight tonight was a female scrap with Chandra Engel over Meghan McHugh. After the ladies got dirty in the ring our 5th fight saw Ryan George take it to Matt Williams. And in a heavy match, before intermission, we saw Matt Reaves defeat Eric Davis! After intermission it was Dominic Cantu defeating Josh Lyons. Crazy Tim beat Steven Kinzer in match number 8. Fights 9 and 10 got switched and we saw Paul Whitworth defeat Anthony Bell in a split decision that went the full three rounds! 1:10 into round number 1, winner by tap out arm bar was Anthony "Shark Bait" Guiterrez over David Williams. Intermission right now. Bout 9, I suspect, will happen afterwards...
Back from Intermission and I was correct, ain't I's smart???, Kelvin Tiller vs. Jet Jones went the full three with a split decision in favor of Tiller!

Two Title Matches closed out the night.

First one was Rob "Big Chief" Haney against Wayman Carter of Topeka that went the full three as well. Big Chief had a solid group of followers rooting him on, however that didn't effect the outcome as Carter won by split decision.

In the Main Event we saw Travis Sauer taking on Olathe's Tony Davis. In the 3rd round, bouncing back from a low blow in the 1st Round, we saw Davis walk away victorious!

Holiday's aside, December's gonna be busy!

I was looking over my DayMinder today and realized that December is chock full of shows both Rock and Comedy. Here's a breakdown of some I plan on attending:

Friday-4th-Blue Corner Fights at Harrah's VooDoo Lounge-I'm handling the music for the fighters and in between. Should be a blast. Come out and see grown men kick each other's asses!

Saturday-5th-Megadeth at the Beaumont Club-I've never seen MegaDave in action and suspect the Bomont will be packed and angry!

Wednesday-9th-Music of Star Wars at the Sprint Center-I grew up loving Star Wars. I still watch Star Wars. I even have some old and new figurines... So What?

Thursday-10th-KISS at the Sprint Center-I'm on the fence about whether or not I'll attend this. Yes it's KISS, yes they're legendary, yes they're also in their 60's.

Friday-11th-The Rock's (Sold Out) Twisted Christmas at the Midland-Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Adelitas Way, and Sick Puppies. I'll definitely be there for this one (Duh!).

Saturday-12th-This day's gonna be busy. Choices are:
Jim Norton/Jim Florentine at the Uptown
Stephen Lynch at the Midland-Honoring the tickets from his postponed October show. I'll probably be at this one before I catch...
Red Line Chemistry at Davey's Uptown-The guys are gonna roll out some new tunes and gear up for the New Year's Eve Big Ball (as of this blog is NOT Sold Out... but surely will!)

Thursday-17th-Harley Giveaway Party at Harrah's VooDoo Lounge-Must be 21 to enter. Doors at 7, followed by The Veer Union, then one lucky listener will win themselves 2 brand new pieces of American Muscle!

Wednesday-23rd-Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Sprint Center. I've never seen the TSO in action and I'm thinking this will be there year!

Peppered in all of this is a couple more Chiefs Home Games, a mustache party, X-Mas and of course...

NEW YEAR'S EVE BIG BALL!!!With Rev Theory, Cavo, and Red Line Chemistry, this is gonna be a blast as we ring in 2010. Again, as of this blog it's not Sold Out... but don't wait as I'm sure it will soon.

(Update) What makes Dave Grohl cry.

True story... I believe it was Friday. Ali and I had come home after being out and about and flipped on the telly to a channel called Palladium. And much to my excitement it was a 2008 live performance of the Foo Fighters from Wembley. Thing was... Dave Grohl was on drums, Taylor Hawkins was singing, and joining them on stage was John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and they were destroying it, I mean absolutely decimating a cover of "Rock n Roll"! Totally killing it... All in a good way. Naturally, the crowd was going ape sh!t!!

After snapping a couple few photos, and thanking Jones and Page, Grohl proclaimed to the audience, "Today is the greatest f**king day of my entire life!!" Again, crowd went ape sh!t! They, the Foo, then closed out the show with their number of "Best of You" with all band members in their proper places.

When you watch this below, take note about halfway thru of how truly amazing an experience this was to the band and Grohl especially. Made me tingle all over. Enjoy.

What I'm Thankful For

It's Monday morning, somewhere halfway between 8 and 9 AM, been up since 7:50 and honestly considering putting this new blog on hold since I've been stuffing thy face with turkey, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, coffee, candy, popcorn, wine, lil' cigars and an assortment of items perishable, nonperishable, intoxicating and truth be told bowel shakingly irritating.

Translation: I may have to hit the hoop, drop some kids off at the pool, take a dump... or as my girl says to the dog, "gotta go to the baff-room".

I'm back, sorry to have stepped away for so long. I got caught up reading an outdated issue of Entertainment Weekly and their synopsis of 2012, the movie. They gave it a B. But I digress, as Thanksgiving '09 is now finished and behind us I figured I'd get all sappy on you, the ever faithful listener, and regale ya with what I'm most thankful for.

Let's start with the fact that this planet provides us with oxygen. For a little while now I feel like we as humans haven't been giving the ol' O2 the respect it deserves. We must focus ourselves on the fact, just a little bit-like in the morning when you're plucking hairs out of your nose before you get in the shower, that without Oxygen there is no humans. Throw an H before that rascally O2 and you've got something else on this planet I'm a big fan of and that's Water. Drinking it. Bathing in it. Cleaning the dog with it. That water is really something. Have you ever... ya know... in it??? Wow! Good times, good times.

And speaking of pets. Those little critters make for great snacks in the middle of the night. No, I'm kidding. But if the apocalypse does happen, and I've got fire and nothing to eat... I still probably wouldn't eat them. Savage Zombies bent on devouring brains would probably eat them. And us for that matter.

If I don't mention that which doesn't need to be mentioned I think my family and those closest to me would give me a swift kick in the junk. So to all those I spent dinners with, watch some of the games with, went to the movies with and out for bevys with over the Holiday break... I'm ever so Thankful for you all. Love ya! Mean it! Now get off my blog ;)

I'd like to now address us and the U that makes us who we are. I'm super-dope, without a doubt, Ho Fo Sho Thankful for YOU this year. Being back at the Rock. Doing afternoons for you guys. Talking on the phone, Via IM/Email, running into you in person out and about, this year especially, I'm thankful for you. We've had some serious fun over the last couple of months and are going to have a blast in December with Twisted Christmas and the New Year's Eve Big Ball! Closing out 09 and welcoming in 2010 is gonna be bananas and I hope you've brought enough for everyone!

Me and the City of Mission...

Are square!

This morning I had the lovely privilege of going to court in the wonderful City of Mission, State of Kansas. Arriving a few minutes before 8 my number was 45. That meant, 44 people... cases... dockets.. in front of me before I could stand in front of the judge and plead my case. Funny thing was, I some how got stuck in the front row. Grrr... and what I thought was going to make matters worse was the name of the judge. Honorable Judge Drill. I sh!t you not! His last name was Drill.  In my brain I figured I was screwed.

I noticed something in common from all those slowly, languidly walking towards the judge when their number was called. You could tell they were guilty and wicked as their shoulders were rolled forward with fear, their backs had what would best be described as a small lump of anxiety, and every person who was "innocent until proven guilty" had eyes swelling with panic, like that of a frightened child, as they explained their reason with sorrow laden lyrics.

Once liberated, continued, or dismissed an air of joy and hope, freedom and happiness filled them as they confidently strolled out of court and out into the world... presumably to prove the fatal American flaw we all live by, "It's only wrong if you get caught."

I did wonder, as the court was only on docket number 24 by this time, if the laws created by man to protect man were too difficult for man to abide by? I suspect the answer's No, it just costs a lot to be Free... and today I paid for my Freedom. America, F**k Yeah!

PS-Judge Drill was and is an honest and good man. Just wanna make that proclamation.

It's Monday, the weather's crappy and the only thing on the telly is..

californication300x300

of course it's on DVD, Season 2, but if you've never seen this show Holy Snot! it's a trip man. First off, I don't know if it's a clear representation of life in LA but it's pretty gnarly what all goes on with the show's main character, Hank Moody, played by David Duchovny. And if you don't know what it's about here's a quick synopsis;

Hank's a writer in LA. Has a child. Is madly in love with his baby's momma Karen, played by Natascha McElhone, but she won't give in to him because of his "antics". Therefore Hank does all of the indulging he can in modern day Sodom and Gomorrah and thus jeopardizes any chance of making amends with Momma Karen.

The writing is fantastic, the usage of LA as a key back drop is well done, and I don't think I've seen one episode where there hasn't been some sort of prominent display of nudity, to quote Homer Simpson, "Wooo Hooo!" I'm nearly done with Season 2 and stoked about having the DVR ready and set for Season 3.

Life in the City: The Sting. (With Photos!)

After I had finished my breakfast this morning and wrote a quick blog about the Leonard Cohen concert last night at The Midland, I was checking emails and kept hearing an insane amount of police sirens. You know those quick little bursts of bells and whistles informing YOU, the driver, you needed to pull over. Upon inspection I found out it was a "Sting"... at least I guess that's what you'd call it.
Here's how it goes:
SAM_0346

On can only assume this normal looking individual is a plain clothes police officer. His job, if you will, is to enter the crosswalk and proceed across the street. Note the "Pedestrian Crossing" sign.

SAM_0347

SAM_0397

As the cars approach, they're supposed to yield to pedestrians.

SAM_0398

This person, clearly, didn't. And the hawk was waiting!

SAM_0399

SAM_0400

Sucka's last moment of freedom!

SAM_0401

BUSTED!

SAM_0375

You'd think this guy would be safe. Clearly the "cop" isn't onto his side of the street yet. But...

SAM_0379

Busted too!

And look who came out to report! Who is that? Channel 9, maybe 5? How'd you guys hear about this? Just curious :)

SAM_0417

Lesson here is simple kids, when seeing a person or persons crossing inside their little safety box AKA the cross walk, might wanna slow down and let them through. You never know, they might nab you and give you a ticket!

Saw Leonard Cohen last night at The Midland.

And it was fantastic. Allison couldn't make it so I had my neighbor Andy, lead guitarist from Red Line Chemistry, roll with me. He'd never heard of Cohen, I found out as we walked to the venue. I reassured him it'd kick some serious ass and we were not disappointed at all. Arriving a few minutes after eight, we walked in right at the start of THE song I was desiring to hear the most; "Everybody Knows".

Cohen's library is an outstanding one with tunes I'm sure you've heard a time or two before. I highly recommend Googling his name and catching some of his videos. For a guy who just turned 75 he's still an exciting performer to watch and was recently inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame with Lou Reed stating Leonard is of the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters".

Camping out.

My girlfriend's dad just picked up some land outside of Manhattan KS. The story goes the house was built right after the Civil War and during Prohibition was used by some bootleggers. On Saturday we cleared out a bunch of brush, an attic, a root cellar, the lower level and what can best be described as an old dump where we found a automobile license plate dated 1929.

Here's some photos from our trek.

SAM_0166

Used for the booze! Tons and tons of these bottles were scattered throughout the property. Given the history of the place one can safely assume these were used for the "Bathtub Gin"!

The New Joint...

It's taken me a moment to figure out our new camera, and thus upload photos of our new place, but I've got it understood now! The photos below are of the new digs, sans furniture.

Here's the view coming in from the hall of the entertainment room. Allison's in the corner on the edge of the kitchen. Every night when I come home this is the view I see! Dope.

SAM_0024

View into the kitchen. A killer bar top!

SAM_0026

View into the master bedroom. The alley outside our window turns into St. Paul Avenue. I didn't even know there was a St. Paul Ave in KC. We've got a second bedroom, but I'm not going to put any photos of that up until next time.

SAM_0032

Partial View from the kitchen out the window. I say partial because we can see well into the Westside and as far east as the I-29/I-70 interchange. It's pretty sweet :)

SAM_0037

There's a couple few pictures for you to feast on. Once we're totally in and unpacked I'll take more photos and post them for you guys.

A Rock'n'Roll Poll (Fully Interactive)

En route to work today I was listening to us and Moose threw down a tune by Zeppelin. Which one it was escapes me, but it led to an internal discussion about which rock star has the most distinguishable voice?

Is it Robert Plant? Geddy Lee? Maynard Keenan? Jimi Hendrix? James Hetfield? Steven Tyler? Axl Rose? Or none of the above.

I'm curious, from you guys, what you think, Who has the most distinguishable voice in Rock-n-Roll? Past and Present. And for kicks, state why!

Life in the City:

As of lately I've been posting little nuances and whatnot's, on Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter, from all that I see and do living downtown and the expression when seeing/hearing these things is, "Life in the City".  When I made a post recently about "Life in the City" and incorporated something about The Plaza David, from Ohio, pointed out that The Plaza wasn't "the city, but nothing more than a shopping experience in the 'burbs". Now he's partially correct, but seeing as The Plaza is part of Midtown one could deduce, then, that The Plaza fits the expression of "Life in the City".  In fact, seeing as my life mostly consists of living and playing in Downtown/Westport/Plaza/and on occasion Strawberry Hill in KCK and working at 98.9 in Mission the expression, "Life in the City" encompasses anywhere I am in the "Urban Core".

With that, let us proceed to some of my "Life in the City" postings:

Life in the City: I just saw the real life Jay and Silent Bob, aged fifty to sixty.

Life in the City: When visiting KC pay attention to ALL street lights please. One of you out of towners nearly T Boned us!

Life in the City: When making a left hand turn and someone's walking across the crosswalk with their dog, don't be a dick! Let them cross.

Life in the City: Only here can you walk into a Petco to get your vehicle tags renewed at the DMV.

Life in the city: Some hillbilly crosses a busy intersection on the Plaza, drunk, doesn't have a green light and tells me to 'F off!' when we honk at him so we don't hit him.

Life in the City: The window cleaner on Westport Road gets arrested by the man!

Check back often, as I'll be updating regularly!

Movin' Day & My Arrest PT 2

You guys already know this weekend was Freaker's Ball! And one hell-of-a throwdown it was. Five Finger Death Punch was sick, All That Remains punched everyone squarely in the jaw. Opening acts Changing Faith & 2 Cents killed it. Shadow's Fall always comes to play and Killswitch Engage brought that East Coast attitude we all dug on! And hats off to the Costume Contest winner, The Tin Man! That outfit was stupid!

Sunday was a massive success too. Here's a headline directly from Animal Haven, "A record number of dogs and cats were treated to a new home for Halloween during Animal Haven’s Dogtoberfest Adopt-a-thon event.  Over 165 dogs, cats, and two rabbits were adopted during the 3-day event, reducing the amount of pets currently held at the shelter by 40%.  Many of the pets adopted over the weekend were dogs like Mischa, who had been at the shelter for over a year awaiting a caring home." I want to thank them again for having me out on Sunday from ten to noon.

I've also gotta show some love to Heritage Tow, who came to get my Vette over the weekend. Perfect timing as we finally got neighbors that moved in below us, on the 2nd floor....

Strange timing as we're now moved out. I've got some photos on a camera somewhere, I'll make sure to get those up soon as well as a little video I put together.

Now back to my arrest, last Monday, and the processing that took place in Olathe. To quickly recap: Seven days ago I was stopped in the Target parking lot by an officer from Mission for having expired tags. Upon running my licence he, and I, discovered there was a bench warrant for my arrest for an unpaid ticket of $130. After some back andforth between the officer, his partner, who said "Sir if you don't put your hands behind your back we will taser you", and I, I was "cuffed & stuffed" and driven to Olathe for processing. From all accounts I was given the longer ride to prove a point, but I digress. Once into the processing area my arresting officer as tells them I wanted a private cell because I'm some Radio Personality. I assure you I did not, but after my mug shot they put me into one.

Let's get into the mug shot, shall we??? After being processed a different cop had me come in, sit on the bench, remove my now shoe string-less shoes, remove my long knee high basket ball socks from the Will Farrel movie, "Semi-Pro", which the officer thought were "F**kin' Awesome". I told him thanks and proceeded to stand for my photo shoot. A female police officer, from here on out known as "Hot Cop", had me look directly ahead for the Kodak moment. Once completed I was free to make my phone call. I knew what I had to do, what would be expected of me in a time like this....

Call the studio!

So I did and much to my sha-grin Westward answered. We chatted for a few moments and I told him I'd do my best to be back by the Drive at Five. Hot Cop, AKA Tweety, or Birdie or Cricket reassured me "That won't happen". They all then proceeded to listen to Ryan berate me on air, while I was locked in the cell. Once sprung, bonded, bailed out (around 6PM) it took about another thiry minutes or so to get me completely out of the building. It was at this point I called A-Hole Bob, rushed back to fill in for Westward's seven to midnight shift since he covered my ass, and await all the fun that was and is still being had at my expense.

Don't forget, you have until 10/31 to enter into the "Incarceration Caption Contest" You could win tickets to Zombie, Chevelle, or Kiss!

4 days later as a free man...My arrest, Part I

Greetings blog readers!

As I'm sure many of you know, yours truly joined the ranks of many other Americans out there when I was "Cuffed & Stuffed" on Monday. And in case any of you are concerned about my influence upon your children, I'll let you know, it was and is harmless. An unpaid ticket, of which I didn't show and handle properly, led to my arrest. A single, silly, $130 ticket... led me to my arrest. Cuffed & Stuffed style!

Here's a recap of what went down:

It's close to 2 PM on Monday, the 19th. I'm on I-35, southbound, out of downtown. As I'm taking the Metcalf exit I notice a Mission cop in my rearview mirror. I knew I had expired tags. Pure laziness, up to this point, is why they weren't renewed. As I turn left at the stoplight in front of the Super Target Officer Tom* turns on his lights. I pull into the Target parking lot and he tells me he stopped me for the very reason I know why he stopped me. I proceed to give him my driver's license and insurance. He comes back to my truck, back up in tow, and tells me I need to get out because there's a Bench Warrant for my arrest from the City of Mission. I don't believe this to be true, try to explain my situation about having to be on air at 3, and if I can handle this tomorrow seeing as I have no idea I'm even wanted by the law. On a side note, it's nice to be wanted, just not by the law...

There's some more discussion about how much this fine is for, $130 which the Officer asked if I had on me, how I need to park my truck and blah, blah, blah. Having grown up here in Kansas City, I know that not much crime in Mission happens. To this arresting officer, this is a tension filed moment of which he's trained for and prepared for his entire career. So much so that once out of my truck the co-arresting Officer Sanchez* says to me, "Sir! If you do not put your hands behind your back, WE WILL TAZER YOU!"

I'm not certain my reply. Could have been, "ARE YOU SERIOUS???" or "ARE YOU HIGH???" Luckily one of our sales goddesses, Jen Morten, came pulling through the parking lot. I tell her to inform A-Hole Bob I'm being taken to jail. Officer Sanchez tells her to proceed to Mission City Hall to post my $130 bond. She does so, and this is where it gets fun.

Officer Tom goes inside, gets my paperwork, and takes me to Olathe. Ms. Morten is pulling into Mission's City Hall as we're pulling out. I ask him what he's doing, he replies, "Taking you to Olathe to process." I ask him why were doing that when he told her to come bond me out. He states he never told her that. I said, "Ok, then your partner told her." He states, "I don't know what my partner told her." Then, on the ride out I hear a call on his radio, "... there's a woman her to post bond for Nivens." Again with the reply about taking me to Olathe. I ask him why were going out there when he saw my friend pulling in to pay the fine. His reply, "I don't know who your friend is".

I could go on and on about his aloofness bordering on ineptitude, but I got the picture. He wanted to show me just how much wrong I'm in and how it's his job to enforce the law. Ya know, "To Protect and Serve".

Don't worry Officer Tom, I got served. You did your job... and now, I'm doing mine :)

Come back Monday as I regale you with my processing and the little hottie they called Birdie or Tweety that took my now infamous mug shot (have you added your caption yet?)

ALSO... Sunday from 10 AM to Noon I'll be at Animal Haven. Stop by and let's help find some little critters a nice home!!

*Names changed to protect my ass!

Even at the age of 32, cartoons still rock!

If you heard me at all yesterday talk about the show at the Uptown Theater last night, you know where I'm going with this.

Before that though...

I missed the opening band, High on Fire, which I heard kicked some serious ass. Converge came on after. Yes, they were intense, but I felt like they could spread their songwriting skills beyond, "Orr!! Orr!"... although they are from Boston and possibly giving props to their boy, hockey legend Bobby Orr.

Mastadon was the co headliner. For those that don't know Mastadon, they're considered by many to be one of the more solid Metal bands on the scene . Great set, but for me it was the necessary time needed to leak and get a beer refill. And before I forget, mad love to the ladies in the back bar for hooking a brother up.

I'm not even certain that I'm qualified enough to comment on the awesomeness that is and was Dethklok last night. I was  curious how they'd go about putting on the show seeing as they're cartoon characters. The live, flesh and blood, band was up on the front of the stage dressed in black with not much light used to feature them. Really just enough for them to see their instruments. Behind the live band was the cartoon band, complete with mind bending video that had I been on some form of hallucinogens probably would have totally loved. Best part, for me, was when Murderface left the set to take a leak. If you weren't there, you definitely won't find that as funny as we all did!

As Keanu says, "Whoa"...

What I had desired to be a rather low key weekend, turned into something completely different.

Vette broke down. Yeah, that was awesome!! Driving home on Friday from the studio, Northbound I-35, when all of a sudden... DEAD. I'm told it's the cam...man...dea... hood...broke thing. Did I mention I'm not automotively inclined?

House fire next door to close out Friday night. So Allison and I roll out to the Club Wars finals at the Uptown Theater with Andy & Dave from RLC and as I'm getting into a taxi around close of bar time (3AM) I get a call from Ali that says, "THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR IS BURNING DOWN!!!" In my drunken stupor I ask her to elaborate... "6 FIRETRUCKS PUTTING IT OUT!"... Not that I could do anything, but I told the taxi driver to "Step on it!" (Video coming soon)

We're moving into a new loft! After the disaster that was the house next door to our loft burning and the fact that if our stairs catch fire we're screwed, we decided to pull the trigger on a loft we've been looking at in the Crossroads. North facing view of the entire downtown skyline! It's pimp!! (photos coming soon)

Thanks to Macabre Cinema. For having me out Saturday night and thanks to all who braved the elements. You Rock!!

Andy Warhol exhibit at Union Station. We went to this on Sunday. Pretty dope. They don't allow photos inside at the exhibit, but we snapped a few on the front lawn. Here's one of Allison and I, with a giant Warhol banner in the background of MarilynMonroe. Exhibit runs till January 10th.

Spent the rest of the weekend packing and getting ready for our move.

Yo Nivens... Big plans for the weekend?

Why yes I do...

Tonight, actually, I'll probably be lame as it looks like me and the little lady are moving into a new loft; so we'll be packing up books, DVDs, dishes, etc.

Saturday Night's gonna kick ass as I'll be broadcasting live from Macabre Cinema Haunted House under the 12th Street Bridge. We're gonna have ourselves a blast so come see me anytime from 7PM to 10PM.

Sunday will see us, my girl and mom and her boyfriend, go out to brunch and then over to Union Station. Pop Art Icon, Andy Warhol, has been dead since 1987 but his art lives on and will be displayed there until January 10th and we're going this weekend to check it out.

So all in all I'd say I've got a little of this and a little of that lined up. Have a great weekend yourself and I'll talk to you later or hopefully sometime this weekend!

I used one of my favorite toilets yesterday...

And in the process, somehow, lost my wallet.

I'll get to the wallet in a minute. I've realized in life it truly is all about the "little things". From a simple phone call to your mom to tell her you love her, to a car ride with an old friend to catch up and  even to using one of your favorite toilets.

Yesterday I sat on the throne I'd sat on for years before and, subsequently, hadn't used in the six months I've been gone. As I perused an article in Playboy, yes I was actually reading an article... I'd already looked over the photos, I again felt back at home here at The Rock!

Once I returned home my happiness turned to confusion. "Where the hell was my wallet?" I called Westward in the studio and asked him to check my desk; to no avail. I scoured my bag. Nothing. I double-checked my Vette. Nope.

Hmmm... was there some bathroom Gremlin I didn't notice, swiping wallets from unsuspecting goofs not paying attention? Highly unlikely, but not totally out of the question.

So I came in early today. If that little bastard (Gremlin) was using my credit cards to order some wicked off the wall porn from Germany or say Japan, well damnit, I was gonna catch him in the act...

My wallet was left in the pocket of my sweatshirt I left behind... I'll say it for you, "WHAT A DUMBASS!"

Did I mention how excited I am to be back :)

Oh How Great It Feels To Be Back!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to everyone who's sent me a text/email/comment/& called in!

As a kid who grew up in Kansas City and started everyday of high school with The Rock's Morning Show (is that dude Johnny still on it ;) Being able to be a Production Intern under AJ in 1998 I thought I'd reached the top! I had no idea, it was only the beginning. For those who know me and my story, this will be a recap, but for those who're learning about me for the first time, I'll keep it short.

In July of 2004 I was hired by The Rock on a part time level; Saturday Morning Board Op for The Morning Show leftovers. I quickly moved into a weekend/fill in role, then in March of '06 I took over the duties of nights. It'd be an understatement to say I absolutely loved what I did!

The economy hit everyone hard, and The Rock was no exception. On April 13th I was downsized and it will forever be remembered as one of the saddest days of my life.

October 5th, will forever be remembered as one of the happiest days of my life! I'm back home at The Rock and with you! In a new time slot, Afternoon Drive. I cannot, again, express how much this means to me, how happy I am, and how thankful I feel to be back on air at 98.9 and working with such amazingly awesome people as I do.

So here's to our future and all the kick ass Rock we're gonna Roll!
